A prominent minister in the Mamata Banerjee-government in West Bengal, Siddiqullah Chowdhury, said no one can ban beef in Bengal.
“Muslims and others have been eating beef in Bengal for 1200 years. No one can ban it”, he said.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while campaigning in the state, had said if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in Bengal, it would ban beef.
Chowdhury said, “Yogi says his party would ban beef if it comes to power. He is promoting the Hindu mentality.”
He also criticised the Supreme Court for the Ram temple verdict. He asserted the Supreme Court had given the verdict in favour of the Ram temple under pressure.
Settling a decades-old title suit, the Supreme Court of India in November 2019 ruled in favour of the Shri Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Chowdhury also said the Muslims were angry with the Modi government on the issue of Shri Ram temple and wouldn’t vote for his arty.
The voting for the assembly election in West Bengal is spread over eight phases starting March 27. The counting of votes will start on May 2.
Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has been in power in West Bengal since 2011. This time, it is facing huge anti-incumbency.
