If tired of reading physical or e-books, now enjoy them by ‘listening’. A Delhi-based telecom engineer turned entrepreneur Atul Saini has made it possible by inventing the world’s first illustrated speaking Bhagavad Gita, which helps one to experience the divinity. Within four months of the launch in August 2019 the ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’ has reached more than 3000 homes including the hands of top personalities including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Guruji, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avadheshanand Giri, stars from Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani to name a few. There is a huge demand from the international audience also. Presently, it is available with Hindi and English translation, but soon you will have it in many Indian and foreign languages. The Speaking version of the Bhagavad Geeta has been liked not only by the older people but by the youngsters as well. Before starting work on this project, Shri Saini worked as a telecom engineer for about 12 years in various leading global domains developing different telecom products. Originally, he hails from Sannoth Village, near Narela, in Delhi. “Innovation is my passion, and I love doing new research which helps the society,” he says. Now Atul is working on the concept of producing books with motion visuals as we have watched in ‘Harry Potter’ movie. Organiser Chief News Coordinator Dr Pramod Kumar spoke to him in New Delhi to understand the whole concept of Speaking Bhagavad Geeta and how it works. Excerpts:

How did the idea of ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’ click in your mind?
The concept of ‘speaking book’ is that a normal printed book can speak. We started working on this technology in India in 2011. When I look at our rich Indian heritage, which has so much to offer to the world, I see a gap that people have Geeta in their homes, but they are not reading and practising the wisdom offered in it. There are many reasons for this. One of them is that it is written in Sanskrit, which is not read in most of the homes now. So, we decided to start work on this speaking Bhagavad Geeta. These days Geeta is also considered as a management tool and used in some of the management institutes. The wisdom in Geeta is useful for all whether students, housewives, business owners, and can help them to take mature decisions. When anybody is confused, Geeta shows the way. There are relationship issues too that people are facing in the modern world. If you go a little deeper you find that the root cause of many problems today is related to lack of self-knowledge. This inspired us further to put our efforts in this direction.

What is the technology that works in ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’?
The technology is very simple. It is ‘touch and speak’ technology. There is electronic hardware, which we have designed as a flute. We have named it ‘Wisdom Flute’, a flute that gives you wisdom. It has a sensor, which senses the book. We print the book in a special way so that the flute can speak out the written text. This is a simple technology of touch and play. The result is very good, as it gives the users learning exposure through all the senses. For example, when we read a book only our eyes are involved and our brain gets input through one sense. When we watch a TV, our audio and visual senses are involved. The input to the brain goes through two senses. The beauty of the technology used in ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’ is that the third sense is also involved in it i.e. the touch sense. This means when someone operates the device all three senses are actively involved in the learning process simultaneously. This gives a multi-sensory exposure to the brain resulting in much faster learning. The best part is one controls the learning at one’s own pace, If you want to learn a shloka, you touch the wisdom flute on that shloka and listen to it. If you don’t understand in one attempt, you touch it again and listen. You can touch any number of times and listen. You can keep it repeating till you get it properly. In this way, you control the learning. Since all the senses are involved the learning happens very fast.

The audio, visuals and design that you have done in this book are really fantastic. How did you arrange it?
Since we have been working on it for the last seven-eight years, we have a proper team of experts and our own studio also. We organise everything as per the requirement. For this particular project, we arranged professional voices who have worked for Bollywood as well. If you listen to the Sanskrit and English voice, they are really wonderful. The same is for Hindi. Each shloka is classically composed and sung by classical singers and is based on different raagas. The impact is that the audio is very soothing to the ears. You just play the Wisdom Flute and it will keep reciting. It is so soothing that if you keep your eyes closed and continue to hear, you go into meditation. It is because the whole composition has been done in a particular raag. Indian classical music has a strong impact on the brain. Also, chanting has an impact on the brain. The shlokas of Geeta also have another impact on the mind. Overall, it is a very good tool to keep your mind in a very peaceful state.

What is the cost of a book and how many copies you have sold so far?
We purposefully made it very premium quality. When we thought of its design, we made it in such a way that it looks beautiful. If you see the illustrations that we have made they are very classic and premium. The printing quality is also high class. The gold lettering, the UV and different other effects have been created so that the book looks beautiful. When something looks beautiful, a person tends to get attracted to it and like to get it and when we get it we tend to use it as well. That was the purpose to make it very premium. If you see the quality of the Wisdom Flute it is also marvellous. Though it is plastic, it looks like a wooden flute. The whole package has been designed very exclusive. We have priced it Rs 15,000 per copy. The book is available in a very beautiful gift pack. One can visit our website www.t3shopping.com for buying a copy of the book. Since August 2019 we have sold around 3000 sets.

How many years did it take for you to produce it?
Around three years. Expertise is very specific. Geeta is something, which needs very much care while presenting before the people. It is a simplified version of Geeta. Sometimes the modern mind finds it very difficult to understand the explanation available on the internet or text available, So, we have rewritten the meaning of shlokas in a manner so that the modern mind understands and relates to them with ease.

The technology that you have used is home-grown or imported?
We are a technology company named T3 Translife Pvt Ltd. T3 Stands for Transformation through Technology, which means we aim to bring transformation using the best of technology. The designing, development and all the technology software implementation is done in India for Bhagwad Geeta, yet we import the technology hardware component from our partner as of now. Soon we aim to start producing the hardware as well independently herein India.

How is the response from the young generation?
The initial response is that they are buying it as a gift it to their parents. Anybody can buy it for oneself or gift someone dear. Geeta is useful for everyone. If you are at a senior level it can help you to understand the leadership and helps you take better decisions. Geeta is a scripture, which was delivered in a conflict situation. While taking a decision, the leader has to go through so many conflicts. If a leader can apply that knowledge in his role, it can certainly help in taking better decisions. Harvard and other top universities in the world are conducting research on Geeta. There are management institutes, which are teaching Geeta in their management studies so that people become better managers.

Who released the first version of ‘Speaking Bhagavad Geeta’?
The ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’ was released by Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji at his Ashram in Bengaluru on Shivratri day this year. That was the first prototype that we developed. After that, we took it to the market. We are selling it in the international market also. We have received good orders from international readers. The international price of one copy is $300. In India, it has been gifted by us and also different people to many eminent personalities including Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avadheshanand Giri Maharaj, Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani to name a few. Many in the corporate world have gifted it to their top management officials. Some pharmaceutical companies have gifted it to over 200 doctors. It is being used as a gift to the acquaintances. Boman Irani made a Facebook post after receiving a copy from renowned motivational speaker Dr Vivek Bindra, who is also founder and CEO of Bada Business. People buy it from the retailers and gift them to the persons of their choices. The product is getting good recognition.

We saw in ‘Harry Potter’ movie the books with motion visuals. Is it actually possible in the near future?

Yes, we are working in that direction. As a first step, we are in the process of integrating the book with the mobile phone application so that once you touch the wisdom flute with the book you watch the related video or animation also on the mobile phone or television set. By the end of this year, we will be able to organise a demonstration of it. It is a revolutionary project that will change the way books are read in the era of digeetal technology. It will also change the way students study in schools and colleges. With the help of a device, the students will be able to listen, watch and read the books and also do activities. It will surely make learning easy and more effective.

How is your product different from the audio books available in the market for visually challenged persons?
The audio books for blind persons are a radio type of project. Our product is based on digeetal technology. In the coming days our product can become very useful for the visually challenged persons also as we are designing some engraved signs on every page which a blind person will be able to identify. We have already developed some of such books for NCERT as part of a research project.

How many people helped you in this project?
There are lots of people, who have helped and inspired us. Shri Tarun Bharod from Gujarat is one such person. I also like to recognise the efforts put by my friend and partner Yogesh Ji, Vinay, Sanju, Manju and the whole team, Also my parents Smt Saroj Saini and Shri Sudarshan Shastri helped us in the Sanskrit language understanding and reviewing. There are experts for audio and illustration work. We have a dedicated team which is responsible for designing and developing the product. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji also inspired us to work on this project. When I started thinking about it, I was in a job at Huawei in China and was not sure whether I should leave my job or not. I was very well paid at that time. When Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji blessed the idea then I decided to move ahead in this direction and fully dedicated myself to the project.

Why don’t you contribute to school education also through such books?

We are already working in that direction. More than 2000 schools are using our books at the moment. We have developed content for learning English, Sanskrit, and French. The content for the kids in nursery and KG is available with us.

Now the translation of shlokas in this book is available in Hindi and English only. Is there any plan to provide the translation in other Indian or global languages also?

Yes, definitely we are working in that direction. Following the market response, we have already started developing it in Gujarati and Spanish. We are working on some more Indian and international languages. The next version of ‘Speaking Bhagavad Gita’ will offer more interesting features. We are conceptualising all the pictures in the form of the comic so that we can involve the kids. That will help kids to get involved in Bhagawad Geeta knowledge from the very beginning. We are also working on the explanation part and especially the learning aspect. In the second version, we are encoding the whole Geeta so that people can learn word by word. It will help those who want to learn the recitation of the shlokas. That is the next step on which we are working on. We hope to launch the second version by coming Shivratri in 2020.

Geeta is a holy book. What do you do to ensure the sanctity of the book?

Yes, we know it. Each book is blessed through Vedic Puja before sending it to the subscribers. Hence, people are advised to keep the copy at a sacred and clean place in the home or office. The book is crafted with the world’s most precious eco-friendly materials. Aqua coating has been done to make it waterproof and last generations.
