Communalism in the name of minoritism has peaked again in Kerala with a Medical College Hospital in Kollam making the recitation from Quran compulsory in all institutions under it during all ceremonies, events and convocations in their campuses. As expected, none of the secular parties have raised any objections to the circular when most of the students studying in these institutions belong to other religions and faiths.

Medical Superintendent Azeezia Medical College Hospital in Kollam, Kerala, has issued a controversial ciruclar regarding prayer song for major events of all institutions operating under Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS&R). It reads, it has been observed that there was lack of stipulation of prayer song recitation during major events conducted inside the campus and institutions like convocation, induction ceremony, major meetings incorporating staffs, students, parents, etc. The circular says, it is as per the privileges permitted to the minorities. They refer to the events like convocation, annual day meeting, induction ceremony and all major public functions. It says, those functions should have a prayer session, to begin with, by a recitation from the holy Quran and no other prayer song should substitute this in this institution. It adds that the decision is implemented with immediate effect.
Fact remains, self financed institutions do enjoy all liberties ito select their prayer songs. But, when they say, no other prayer song should substitute this in this institution, it appears to be crossing the limits and negation of the secular credentials. As expected, none of the secular parties have raised any objections to the circular when most of the students studying in these institutions belong to other religions and faiths.
Naturally the people of Kerala are upset a lot. It is too early for them to forget the apathy the constituents of both CPM-led LDF and Congress-led UDF have been maintaning towards Bharatiya, that is, Hindutwa symbols and prayers. Every one remembers the Delhi incident in which the then education minister (LDF) P.J. Joseph joined hands with the other education ministers of non-BJP ruled states in 1998 against Saraswathi Vandan during the opening session of the state edducation ministers’ conference, convened by the then HRD minister Dr. Murli Manohhar Joshi.
This is the latest example of pseudo secularism practised in Kerala. Minoritism is depicted as secularism in Kerala. If one opposes Hindutwa and nationalism, it is again secularism. Kerala witnesses deliberate actions to confuse secularism with minoritism.
