After the JNU and the Delhi University, the Vidya Veerta Abhiyan was successfully launched at the Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) University, New Delhi by its newly-appointed Chancellor and Governor of Manipur Dr Najma Heptulla on June 19, 2017. In a colourful function Dr Heptulla inaugurated the ‘Wall of War Heroes’ displaying portraits of 21 Param Vir Chakra recipient soldiers and also installed a grand 102 feet high National Flag in Jamia Millia Islamia.It is noteworthy that this was her first visit to the university after becoming its Chancellor.
Dr Heptulla, who is the first woman Chancellor of the university, was accompanied by former Rajya Sabha Member and BJP leader, Shri Tarun Vijay, who conceptualised the idea of instituting a ‘Wall of War Heroes’ in various central universities across the country under the Vidya Veerta Abhiyan. The first Wall of War Heroes was inaugurated at the JNU last month.
Highlighting her emotional attachment with JMI, being the granddaughter of freedom fighter and Independent India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, she said, “It is a historical moment that I have the honour of inaugurating the installation of 102 ft high national flag and the portraits of Param Vir Chakra Vijeta soldiers, who are the guardians of our peace and it is because of them that we are able to work in universities peacefully.” She said that Jamia is an institution that has a rich nationalist past and has been in the forefront of the Freedom Struggle.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Tarun Vijay said that “soldiers are our real heroes and it is because of the inspiration of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that Vidya Veerta Abhiyan has been launched.” He thanked the support of Shri Arun Jaitley Union Minister of Defence and Finance and Shri Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Human Resource and Development. —Organiser Bureau
