SFI workers are charged under Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act after publishing obscene contents in college magazine to insult National Anthem
The CPM juniors once again misused college magazines for
spreading their venomous anti-national and immoral thoughts. The latest one is Pellet, the college magazine, published by Brennen College, Thalassery in Kannur district, the bastion of CPM as they claim. It depicts a couple having sex during the National Anthem. Obviously, the college union is ruled by SFI, the student wing of CPM. Media reports suggest that the controversial sketch is carried on the 13th page of the magazine. It is alleged, a distorted presentation of the National Anthem played in the movie houses suggest that the time of National Anthem in the theatre is good for sexual intercourse.
The magazine is a blatant endeavour to misuse it for cheap and dirty political gains of the CPM. The BJP’s Kerala unit tweeted: “Brennen College magazine published by SFI dedicates its edition to the Kashmiri Separatists and names it ‘Pellet.’” This should be viewed in the context of the Supreme Court order stating that the National Anthem should be played before films and the viewers shall stand up during that period. It is to be noted that five members of the current Kerala legislative Assembly are the alumnus of this college. The title of the magazine and the contents appear to be insulting Bharatiya military and glorifying stone pelters in Kashmir. One picture shows a barbed wire fencing. The captions in Malayalam read (1) Can a barbed wire fencing create ‘Rashtra’? (2) Will it be anti-national if someone throws food to the starving men across the fencing? Another sketch suggests the sexual intercourse in a movie house while National Anthem is being played on the screen.
The ABVP carried out a protest march to the college demanding immediate legal actions against the culprits. When the pressure mounted, the State Government registered a case against 13 persons including student editor and staff editor. Organiser has gathered that Dharmadam police has registered the case under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971, against staff editor KV Sudhakaran, student editor Athul Rameshan and eleven others SFI workers. It is based on the complaint filed by ABVP leader Prem Sai. It is a non-bailable offence. But, interestingly not a single arrest has taken place so far, thanks to the CPM-led government ruling the state with CM Pinarayi Vijayan himself holding the Home Ministry! And, no case against the Principal who is the final authority of the magazine!
Later, college declared the removal of the two controversial pages. But, by that time the distribution of the copies was almost over. So, ABVP demands the total withdrawal of the magazine. The reaction of the college Principal Muralidas was strange. He says, nothing wrong with the contents. If viewed in a narrow-minded manner, it causes misunderstanding. He says, they are trying to convince the students about it.
Since the SC ruling for playing National Anthem in the movie houses, many protests took place in Kerala, especially at the venue of International Film Festival of Kerala.

He added: “The protestors suddenly tried to create trouble on the route the PM’s motorcade was planned to take on June 17 to the Metro inaugural venue. It happened when the SPG and other security agencies were conducting the trial run through the route.” The DGP also said that extremist outfits were funding the protests against the LPG project of the Indian Oil Corporation. |
