Education: An Urgent Need for Change

With time everything requires change, so is the education system of our country. There have been endless discussions on the changes that our education system essentially requires. It has been often attacked by students, parents and teachers, on topics such as the practicality of subjects, reservation policy, lack of subject choice etc. This article throws light on some of the basic changes that the Indian Education System urgently needs to work upon.
Need of Interactive Education
Mindlessly mugging up the syllabi, is hampering the much creative and innovative minds of the students. Owing to the fixated style of question papers that have been doing the rounds in board exams, from time immemorial, rote learning still continues. Imagine a student cramming balanced equations for his exam. Funny, isn’t it? Due to this many schools are trying to bring in an interactive education system. Interactive learning is a hands-on, real-world approach to education. Lectures are changed into discussions, and students and teachers become partners in the journey of knowledge acquisition.
Marks Should Not be Ultimate Decider
Many have voiced their opinion on how justified is evaluating a candidate’s performance in a three-hour exam. Shouldn’t other parameters such as interactivity/ participating level in classroom, leadership qualities, communication skills etc. be given equal weightage? Well, for now, this seems sounds like an utopian proposition. Changes in the marking system will surely carve out some genuine talents, and not just mechanical puppets.
All Streams Must be Treated Equally
Generally it is seen that the society gives less weightage to a student who has taken Humanities as compared to his counterpart who has taken Science or Commerce. People will ask hundred questions from a student who has taken Humanities as to what he would do after taking this course. What we often forget is that this student will possibly have wider job options to choose from in the future.  It is time to shift our focus from medical and engineering courses to other vocational streams such as Mass Communication, Hotel Management, Tourism Management, Language Courses etc. The basic
problem is that students are  often ignorant about such courses in schools. It is important to make them vigilant, so that they can opt for a course of their interest and potential.
Seats Should Not be for Sale
It is a hard-hitting reality that admission to some of the best colleges in India, is a smooth-sail for the economically well off in our society. By offering money one can easily land in a college of his choice or simply get the preferred degree by just sitting at home. Although the Government has given strict instructions against this practice, it is disheartening to that it still prevails in our society till date. Offering and accepting money to give a seat to an undesired student is an unethical policy. We all must condemn the same and help improve our education system.
Devoted Teachers Required
While choosing a profession, teaching has become an easy option to choose from. It is safe, well-paying, risk-free, low on pressure job, and of course, one reaches home by noon. Teachers/ Professors in today’s time are simply concerned about their salary. Rare are the ones who teach for the betterment of students .It is time that students should have quality education and teaching from experts rather than just restricting them to small classroom studies. Students must see a leader in their teacher, not a salaried person  trying to hold on to his mantle.
We appreciate some of the  education providers who are working upon the drawbacks of Indian
education system, but the air of melancholy still surrounds us. The onus relies on all of us rather than just the system. What you sow now, will reap later.  So, we all must work betterment of  our education system.  The change may be gradual but will benefit the society at a later stage.
