Raksha Bandhan is one of the festivals, a celebration of the undying love between a sister and a brother. It is to be believed that Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi has been celebrated in Bharat since the time of Dwapar Yug. At the time of Draupadi’s cheerharan Bhagwan Krishna saved her dignity by his bleeding finger which was getting draped as saree on her. This is how Bhagwan Krishna saved Draupadi’s dignity and promised to protect her life long as her brother. That is how the festival of Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated since then.
Meaning Says it All
Rakshabandhan, both the words stand for ‘a bond of protection’, and it signifies that the strong must protect the weak from all that’s evil. On this festival a brother promises his sister while she ties the thread or Rakhi on his wrist that he will always be there with her in every thick and thins of her life. And both brother and sister cherish their bond of love and affection.
Why Rakhi?
In the present time where our attention is more focused on the advancements of life and being busy in our hectic schedules, rituals like Rakhi help us to ease out from the various social strains, induce a sense of happiness and security. It not only strengthens the love between siblings but also transcends the harmony among whole family. Time has changed and so the ways of celebrating this festival. Today, siblings not only practise the rituals but try to make this day special for each other. Giving gifts or showing special gestures by making them feel happy shows that the love is the same since decades.

a This is exactly what Rippenjeet, a social science teacher from Ludhiana did for her younger brother Sandeep Singh, perusing mechanical engineering from a city college. Her brother was 18 when their family got to know that he was suffering from kidney failure in 2013. As doctor said no to both the parents for the kidney donation for their son because of their health issues then Sandeep Singh’s elder sister came forward and donated her kidney to save his brother’s life. And now brother-sister duo is living happily.
a Same happened with the Matunga-based businessman Champak Haria, 67 who received his most significant gift, a kidney from his 62-year-old sister Pushpa Dedhia in 2013. Among family members Pushpa Dedhia stepped into and did not allow any one to donate the kidney. She wanted to save her brother’s life as she knew that their blood group was same. And this became the most advantageous point in her brother’s kidney transplant surgery.
