States : Voice of Descent

As the big event Nabakalabara process has already started with identification of sacred neem trees for making of idols of deities and rituals, the Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth Swami Nischalananda Saraswati has expressed his dissatisfaction for not being consulted by the State Government for the ongoing preparation for the festival.
After every 12 to 19 years when Joda Asadha (Double month of Ashadha) in Hindu calendar comes, the wooden idols of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Sudarshan are replaced through three month long religious process starting from identification of darus (logs of neem trees) to change of Bramha.
The Puri seer with his voice of descent in a letter to devotees of Lord has said, “no one from the administration has consulted me or sought any suggestion so far” However the seer in his letter has said members of the Mukti Mandap (the highest decision making body in Jagannath temple) and Gajapati Maharaja, however, paid courtesy visits to me, in the process making it clear that he has no difference of opinion with religious bodies and his anger is only directed at the Government and administration.
The seer while targeting Government and administration has said that the move to ignore his role in religious function is planned with an evil intention to make Lord Jagannath Temple and its rituals without any religious guidance. He specially targeted top mandarins of State Government and departments associated with Mahabrabhu Sri Jagannath Temple and its rituals.
It may be noted that in a similar controversy last year the Odisha High Court had intervened to uphold role of Sankaracharya in religious functions of Sri Mandir. The Hon’ble Court then had observed that only for the management of the Temple’s secular affairs the Government has a role and has no right to interfere with its religious affairs.
The Orissa High Court in unequivocal terms had made it clear that the State Government has a much defined role, to carry out what Shankaracharya has directed to do on religious matters. Apart from this to maintain law and order and manage logistics support for the world famous Ratha Yatra was the responsibility of the Government authority, the High Court had said.

Expectation of the people of Bengal from BJP was very high in terms of Municipal election results and Bengal BJP could not come up to the mark as it did not have such organisational back up to satisfy people’s sentiment. In 2010, BJP had won 16 seats in 9 Municipalities. But this time they had won 82 seats in 36 Municipalities. In Kolkata Municipal Corporation BJP had won 7 seats, more than double of the last figure.
On the other hand the Left Front had won 240 seats in 2010, whereas this time they had won 142 seats only. Almost same downward journey was recorded by the Congress. In 2015, their share in Municipal election was only 111 seats. Mamata Banerjee’s party wins 114 of 144 wards of city, 71 of remaining 91 Municipalities in State. It means Trinamool is in total control of the State. But people feel that Bengal turns a darker shade of Green (This is the colour of the TMC flag). Mamata had boasted saying, “It’s a verdict against slander.” This has been countered by Rahul Sinha, president, State BJP, “This was a mockery of democracy.TMC used every trick in the book. The state had been reluctant to see central forces. Still they are bleeding.”
This credit, of course, goes to Asim Basu, BJP candidate, who defeated Sachchidanand Banerjee, TMC chairman of KMC in Ward No 70 by 1981 votes. It was a Modi wave just a year ago, when not so vastly popular BJP surged ahead to hold the centre stage of Bengal’s politics. On April 28 as the Civic Poll results were announced it was evident that the party has an uphill task in about year’s time before the Assembly Polls are held. The party which failed to win over even a single civic body in the state which went to the poll in late April had only one consolation that of getting seven seats from the existing three seats in Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Different charges were put forward against the Congress, TMC and other party leaders. All through these years BJP was free from this kind of situation. It was alleged that many sincere and committed workers of the have dissociated from the party just before the Municipal election. Even in the last Lok Sabha election BJP’s vote share in the state was 24 per cent and now after the civic poll results were announced the vote share figure of BJP has come down to 16 per cent. The fact remains that the Modi Wave is still very strong in West Bengal.
