Children , do you know why is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated? It is celebrated every year in the Hindi month of Chaitra (Chaitra Pournima) on the15th day of Shukla Paksha to commemorate the birth of Sri Hanuman. Hindus worship Sri Hanuman as a divine creature. This celebration is significant to all, however, Brahmacharis, wrestlers and bodybuilders are specially inclined towards this celebration. Lord Hanuman is known by many names such as Bajrangabali, Pavanasuta, Pavankumar, Mahavira, Balibima, Marutsuta, Anjanisut, Sankat Mochan, Anjaneya, Maruti, Rudra and many more.
Having great devotion, strength, knowledge, power, bravery, intelligence and spirit for selfless service Lord Hanuman devoted his life for Sri Ram and never showed his bravery and intelligence without any purpose. The devotees of Lord Hanuman always seek his blessings for their bright future. He is worshipped in many ways by his devotees; some meditate by chanting his name to get power, fame, success etc whereas some read the Hanuman Chalisa to get the same. In all the mandirs of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, Hanumanji and Ganeshji are consecrated in their own special shrines in front of the mandir. They are offered special puja on Saturdays with oil and white ankada flowers.

Pre-birth story of Hanuman

Once Angira rishi visited Indra in heaven. Indra welcomed him by arranging a dance by a damsel named Punjiksthala. As soon as she commenced dancing, the rishi closed his eyes to meditate on Paramatma. When the dance ended, the rishi remained silent. Indra then asked him, “O rishi! How was the dance?”
“I was absorbed in meditation of the Almighty. Such dance does not interest me.” Indra felt ashamed. However, the ego-filled damsel sneered, “How can such a fickle rishi not appreciate my dance?” Hearing this, Angira cursed her, “Behold! You shall degrade to earth from heaven. You will be born as a female monkey in the mountain forests.”
The whole of heaven plunged into consternation. The damsel greatly regretted and repented. She repeatedly begged for forgiveness. Finally, the merciful rishi solaced her, “A great devotee of Paramatma will be born to you. He will forever serve Paramatma.”
This damsel was the daughter of Kunjar, the king of the monkeys. She married Kapiraj Kesari of Mount Sumeru. She gave birth to Hanuman on the15th day of Shukla Paksha in month of Chaitra with the help of five divine factors such as curse and blessings of the saint Angira, her prayers, blessings of Lord Shiva, blessings of Vayu deva and Putreshti Yagna’s fruit. It is considered that Lord Shiva had to rebirth as a human being on the earth in his 11th Rudra avatar in the form of Hanuman as He could not serve to Sri Ram by being in His real form.
The whole vanar community and the human fraternity was happy and celebrated his birthday with great fervour and enthusiasm. From then on Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated by his devotees .Hanumanji obtained boons from Varuna Deva –the water deity and Yama – the deity of death, victory and immortality. From Brahma He obtained the power of inducing fear in enemies, of destroying fear in friends, to be able to change His form at will and to be able to easily travel to wherever He wished. From Mahadevji He obtained the boons of longevity, spiritual wisdom and ability to cross the ocean. Hanumanji attained a supremely formidable form. However as such, He began harassing rishis. Therefore Bhrugu rishi and Angira admonished Him that He would forget the ability to use His formidable power and only a divine personality will later guide Him to use it appropriately.
Henceforth Hanumanji lived an ordinary simian life in Kishkindha, on Mount Hrushyamuk as Sugriva's advisor. Only when Sri Ram and Lakshman arrived in search of Sita, did the two first meet. Thus His life turned a new course.

How it is celebrated?

According to the legend, once Lord Hanuman saw Goddess Sita applying sindoor (vermillion) on her forehead. On seeing this, Lord Hanuman enquired from her the reason for applying sindoor. Goddess Sita replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Hanuman then smeared His entire body with sindoor, in an effort to ensure Sri Ram’s immortality. So on this day, devotees visit temples and apply tilak of sindoor on their foreheads as this is considered to bring good luck.
People read Hanuman Chalisa as it has ability to conquer the evil spirits and provide peace to the mind and offer Prasad of laddoos. As Lord Hanuman was born to the vanar community having reddish orange body, that’s why most Hanuman temples have reddish orange coloured Hanuman idol.

Different dates of Hanuman Jayanti

In the Maharashtra, it is commemorated to the Purnima in the Hindu Lunar month of Chaitra. However, according to other Hindu calendar, it falls on 14th day (Chaturdashi) of Ashvin month in the dark fortnight. After puja, Prasad is distributed among people to have full blessings.
In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is celebrated in Margazhi month (between December and January) in the belief that Lord Hanuman was born on the amavasya in the Margazhi month. In Odisha, it is celebrated on 1st day in the month of Vaisakha (in April). In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, it is celebrated on 10th day of Vaishaka month in the Krishna Paksha. It is a 41 days long celebration in Andhra Pradesh which starts from the Chaitra Purnima and ends at 10th day of the Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha month.
