Vivekananda Birth Anniversary was celebrated across the nation on January 12. Commemorating it as National Youth Day, Vivekananda Youth Forum organised a programme for college students at Vel’s College Pallavaram, Chennai. About 800 students representing 36 colleges of Chennai, 43 NSS Project officers, 41 College Administrators and Principals attended the programme. A video show on ‘Punya Bhumi Bharatham’ was shown to the students. The VIT Chairman Vishwanathan, RK Ragha-van, former CBI Director and K Kumaraswamy, Uttar Tamil Nadu Prant Karyavah addressed the gathering. Shri B Prakash, Prant Vidyarthi Pramukh administered an oath on ‘No alcohol drinking’; ‘No drugs’ and ‘Educate the co-students’. They also took oath to serve a village monthly. College wise discussions were conducted for action plan. ‘Run by youth’, which included both boys and girls, numbering 6,000 was organised in Krishnagiri District.
On January 13, a meet with scavengers of Ward Office No.133 in Chennai Corporation at West Mambalam was held. Shri Samba-murth a scavenger initiated casual discussions about their daily livelihood, challenges faced in their work, atmosphere at home, etc. He said that they are not able to give much attention to home as they have to start early in the morning by 4.00 a.m. to reach the work place by 6 a.m. for duty. In spite of all hurdles, they feel happy that they are able to educate their children in colleges.
‘Your duty is to clean the dirt and that is why you are paid’—this was the attitude of the people before. But thanks to Modiji now, cleanliness awareness can be seen among the people and celebrities and they come forward to participate in keeping the place clean, he said.
RSS Sah Prant Karyavah Shri Sambamurthy, Prant Karyalaya Pramukh Shri Srinivasan, Vibhag Sampark Pramukh Shri Muthukri-shnan, social worker Shri Balu, Smt Pushpalatha, T. Nagar, Co-operative Bank Chief Shri Elumalai along with 22 scavengers offered pushpanjali to Swami Vivekananda. In Bengaluru the students took out procession carrying long tri colour to education the people on various issues.

Students Experience in Inter State Living (SEIL), an initiative of ABVP, organised a special programme in Chennai on January 12 to celebrate its Golden Jubilee. The objective of the programme was to establish a cultural rapport and to provide opportunities to the youth of the country to experience ‘Unity in Diversity’. National Integra-tion tour of North-East students to the rest of the country was arranged to make them aware of the cultural similarities across the nation. North-East Students performed various cultural programmes exhibiting the culture of their seven states. Shri P Sriam, Chair-man, Chennai Institute of Technology spoke on the occasion. Shri M Balasubramaniam, Director, Mangal Thirth Estate Ltd., emphasised that our pride lies in the richness of our culture. He said knowledge, character and religion plays a vital role in shaping the society. Shri N Murugan, IAS (Retd) appealed to the participants to contribute one’s efforts to develop integration. Secretary of SEIL, Shri Atul Kulkarni said, “…North-East being richest in its culture and heritage, lack of awareness of these States is the issue of concern. People should develop contact with each other and understand their ethical values.
Kishor Sangama to pay tribute to Yadavrao Joshi
Nearly 630 young swayamsevaks under the age of 14 years attended a unique gathering Kishor Sangama at Hebbal in Bengaluru on January 11. The event was held as a part of birth centenary celebrations of Yadav Rao Joshi who pioneered the Sangh work in Karnataka. RSS Prant Pracharak Shri CR Mukunda addressed the gathering. CEO of Aditya Engineering College Shri BM Nandeesh presided over the function. RSS Bengaluru Mahanagar Karyavah Shri KS Sreedhar was also present. Two simultaneous Path Sanchalan were also held.
