For the last three and half years Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) is struggling hard to find out a space for itself in the political arena of West Bengal. Imagine how pathetic the condition of CPM is. By their own performance during the thirty five years of their stay at the administrative helm, they simply have proved themselves irrelevant in the politics of the State. Not a single party is ready to stand by their side.
CPM is not able to organise even one big congregation of supporters on its own to protest against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) atrocities on their erstwhile supporters. Although this is a fact that the TMC had declared that Badla Noi, Dadal Chai (We want change, not revenge). But they could not keep their promise as many lumpens belonging to CPM had joined the TMC with the motive of revenge. Soon it became crystal clear that the CPM would play the role of ‘Bakasur’ to destroy the TMC. Over and above, those newly joined lumpens of CPM had started such unholy activities which had earned bad name for TMC. The TMC might have some other equations about the CPM cadres but that did not happen. Hence the CPM had developed a perception that their ill motive would start working but soon the ruling party was exposed to a worst type of scam, popularly known as ‘Saradha Ghotala’.
Throughout the hay days of CPM in West Bengal administration, they never entertained the parties like CPI (ML) or Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI). An inherent hatred at the heart of hearts was there. But now they had bowed down to them and beg their help and support in fighting out their enemy. In this process CPM had congregated at least sixteen small parties around them. But on the ground level united show of strength was not visible there. They could not demonstrate their grievances against the RSS and Communalism, Modi’s Liberal Economy or even Love Jihad etc. The people of the State had rejected them on the face of it.
When the CPM leaders sat down to identify the reason or reasons for which people had out rightly discarded them, they could only find out that the decision of the party to quit the UPA 2 on the question of nuclear policy was the sole reason for their all out fall. In a way this assessment was correct as they could not think of any organisational activity without power. Peculiarly, the party is divided on this issue. No issue of public interest have ever bothered them.
People at one stage had given up the hope of any change in the administration. But miracles do happen and the rise Mamata Banerjee was welcomed by the people. What a sorry figure she had cut. Within three and half years her charisma was not only reduced, it has been totally evaporated.
At this juncture, both Mamata’s party TMC and the Left and sundry parties are totally demoralised as the invincible BJP is growing in West Bengal vigorously. No power on earth could stop the onslaught of BJP. Even Muslims are joining the party in large number. That had made other parties think of their bleak future in State politics. Recently Mamata, visited New Delhi and met senior leaders of BJP with a begging bowl saying “Save the State from its imminent calamity”. On the other hand she had been trying for forging a kind of Third Front against the BJP which, of course, has nose dived.                      —Asim Kumar Mitra  from Kolkata
