Kashmir Terrorist Recruitment Case

T Satisan, Kochi

undefinedSpecial NIA court in Kochi sentenced thirteen accused in Kashmir Terrorist Recruitment case to life imprisonment in which three of them got double life imprisonment. Ten others got rigorous life imprisonment. Two out of these ten had already been sentenced to double life imprisonment on the August 12, 2011 in connection with Kozhikode twin blast case. Court stated that those two would undergo imprisonment for Kashmir terrorist recruitment case only after completing the aforementioned double imprisonment for Kozhikode twin blast case. The convicted accused are sentenced to pay the money penalty within the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,50,000.

NIA has revealed the conspiracy of the accused for recruiting the youths and taking them to Kashmir and give them terrorist training for fighting against the country and sabotaging her sovereignty and the integrity. And, there are evidences for Pakistan’s direct involvement in facilitating the accused with the arms and weapon training as well as food and shelter.  Nazeer was the commander of Laskar-e-Taiba and the training was conducted in POK.

The conspiracy came to light when four Kerala youths were killed in Kashmir border during their fight against Indian army on the  October 4, 2008. Even though the inquiry was started by Kerala Crime Branch, later on it was taken  over by NIA. Sabir Ayoob and Pakistani Abdul Wali are still not nabbed and have been declared absconders.

The convicted culprits, while coming out of the court, shouted against the NIA’s inquiry: They are the descendants of Kunjali Marikkar, the valiant Muslim admiral of the Navy of King of Samoothiri of Kozhikode who fought against Portuguese Navy and courted martyrdom about five centuries back hence they do not need any one to teach them what patriotism is !!!

NIA court judge S Vijayakumar  opined that to work hand in glove with the enemy country is dangerous. The AK 47 and other arms seized from                    the accused proved their determination  to fight against the country. Prosecution has succeeded in proving it. Court observed that nexus with                             the enemies is dangerous. Prosecution has proved that the accused joined hands with Laskar-e-Taiba to launch ‘holy war’  (jehad) against our country. Judge adds that Thadiyantavida Nazeer called for anti-national and terrorist activities behind the camouflage of thareeqath classes. Some of the accused got several calls from Pakistan itself proves that they had foreign links. After preparations in Kerala the accused went to Hyderabad and met Abdul Wali, a notorious kingpin of terrorism. From there they headed to Delhi and left for Kashmir; crossed the border and underwent terrorist training in terror camps of POK.  NIA proved, after the inquiry, that there the accused took pledge to destroy India’s integrity. Pakistan had instructed them to engage in continuous fight against the Indian soldiers at the border.

Court observes, the accused kept on propagating that Muslims are harassed and tortured in India hence they called for ‘holy war’ against it.  They aimed at sabotaging the integrity of the country and  create polarisation and division on communal lines by fanning fanatic sentiments. Nazeer rallied Muslim youths and converted them into terrorists. He propagated that he was appointed by God as the savior of Muslims. He conducted religious classes in various parts of the state. The mission was to instigate innocent Muslim youths to fight against their own country. Court said that these terrorists should be given classes in the jail, at least twice a year, on Indian constitution, secularism, etc.

In the meantime, Safia, the mother of Fayaz, the terrorist youth killed in Kashmir, told the media that the life imprisonment sentenced for the Kashmir terrorist case, is insufficient and inadequate. They should have got capital punishment. She said, Nazeer and his terrorist colleagues showed inhuman cruelty to her family by initiating her 21 years old son to terrorism. As the news came about Fayaz’s death she had said that  she did not want to see the mayyathu (dead body) of her slain son ! It was a significant news even for national media those days.  Faisal had taken her son to somewhere under the pretext of learning Quran. She said, for her, country is greater than her son, that is why she did not want to see his mayyathu. She prays  no parent should have such fate and advises the mothers to make sure that their children do not fall into these sorts of traps.

Thadiyantavida Nazeer has already been sentenced for double life imprisonment for the twin blasts case in Kozhikkode and is an accused in Kalamasserry bus burning case and Bangalore blast case. Kalamaserry bus burning was allegedly planned and executed by Nazeer in protest against the imprisonment of PDP leader Abdul Nazar Madani in connection with infamous Coimbatore blast case. Later on Madani was exonerated in 2007. But now he is in Bangalore jail as the prime accused in Bangalore blast case. The latest case registered against Madani is for his plot to assassinate P Parameshwarji, top RSS leader from Kerala.

Intolerance of the Church: Denied Burial to a critic

Prof.  CC Jacob, the author of Jalasnanam —Oru Patanam (Water Bath—A Study), was denied burial in the church cemetery.  The reason is simple : The book contains criticism of the Church. The report  from Thodupuzha, near Kochi, states that  the family members  did the burial in the compound of their family house.

Prof. Jacob belonged to CSI Church. He had served two terms as the syndicate member of  the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. He had retired as the HoD of History in the Henry Baker College, Melunkavu near Thodupuzha. He had held responsible positions in social and political fields.  Since, St. Mathai’s was his parish church, his burial was supposed to take place in the cemetery belonging to that parish.

The significant aspect is the Christian way of rituals conducted in connection with the rituals of the burial. Only the  family relatives of the deceased had attended the rituals. Despite several mediations at different levels,  member of Church and Bishop were denied permission  to attend the burial.  That is why the burial was carried out in the compound of the house.

Bishop had taken a stand that he would permit burial provided the family members lodge an application for it. This is the formal system for the burial of the people who are at loggerheads with the church. But, it is learnt that no one lodged any application.  Observers see this incident as an aggressive posture, of the Semitic religion, denying democratic rights to dissent.                                   (T Satisan, Kochi)
