Grahak Panchayat urges Tamil Nadu CM
Enforce strictly the Packaged Commodities Rules
TAMIL Nadu unit of Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat appealed to the state Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to strictly enforce the Packaged Commodities (Regulations) Rules so that the consumer could know all the necessary information about the product before purchasing. In a memorandum sent to the CM through Principal Secretary, Labour, the Grahak Panchayat also urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the rules related to weights and measures are implemented by a single agency to ensure sustained action in this area.
As per the Packaged Commodities (Regulations) Rules 1975, all packaged commodities must have details of the date of manufacturing, maximum retail price (MRP), name and address of the manufacturer, weight, date of expiry in case of eatable items, customer care number of the manufacturer, etc. In the case of soft drinks, packed food items and the other eatable items like bread and biscuits, the manufacturing date and expiry date were needed to be known whether these were safe for consumption. “But the package wrapper of various commodities sold in Chennai and other places of Tamil Nadu in violation of the Rules do not contain all these details. There are many packaged products in the market which do not have this statutory information and contain only the name and address of the manufacturer with price tag,” said the memorandum.
