Ariel Rubinstein is professor of economics at Tel Aviv University and New York Univiersity and has written books on modern economics. Hence, his lecture notes on microeconomic theory makes it valuable for students. Princeton University has brought out the second edition of Lecture Notes in Microeconomic Theory- the Economic Agent in a paperback volume that is bound to be hit with economic students. These notes are from lectures to masters or doctorate students. Rubinstein explains his understanding of the term economic theory. There are people who believe that economic theory is “a set of theories that can (or should) be tested. Others see it as a bag of tools to be used by economic agents. Many see it as a framework through which professional and academic economists view the world.” He on the other hand sees it as “no more than an arena for the investigation of concepts we use in thinking about economics in real life.”
There are ten lectures along with problem sets and solutions. At the end, there is a set of review problems. The volume is supported by plenty of references and index. Students could go on to read further on a given topic. Most importantly, the book is posted on internet and access is entirely free. Since 2007, when the first edition was published, the electronic version has been updated annually by the author. A useful tool for students and teachers of posts graduate level economics.
