NOWADAYS the urban affluent class has become curious about Vastushastra. The science was very popular during ancient and medieval period and was the backbone for any house or colony construction. There is a strong belief that with its support, human life gains health, prosperity and peace of mind and it protects from the evil forces. We spend a great deal of time and money to accomplish our house and if we orient it carefully, it will transmit to us comfort and security through Vastu effects.
The four main fundamental studies were developed by ancient India. The first three-Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotish in combined form named Dashang Ayurveda and fourth one Vastu-have close association with human mind, body and intellect.
Vastushastra is the oldest and most complete system. It involves assessing of all environmental influences that affect us such as geopathic stress, the five elements of Pancha-Maha-Bhutas (earth, water, fire, air, and space), sun, moon and planets in our solar system. During 3000 to 1500 BC, in the valleys of Sindhu, Saraswati and other rivers, a large sector of Indian subcontinent of 1600 km east-west and 1100 km north-south was developed with Vastu principles. Harappa and Mohen-jo-daro like cities had flourished. Such towns had service facilities of water, drainage etc and many houses of one to two rooms, bungalows, palaces, two storied houses, temples, offices were constructed.
The Epics Ramayana and Mahabharata had a mention of tall structures and Indraprastha city respectively. King Bhoj wrote Vastu-based Samarangana Sutradhara. Matsya Purana and Brihad Sanhita also refer to Vastu. Lord Vishvakarma was the deity for such Vastushilpas.
During Jain and Buddha times, chaitya and Vihar shilpas, were built for sages from rock cut locations at Ajanta, Ellora, Nashik, Karla, and Aurangabad and many schools, colleges, universities temples, stoops, many buildings of medieval period like Qutub Minar, Taj Mahal, Bijapur’s Golghumat etc came into being on Vastu science.
China’s Feng-Shui took birth from Vastu when Gautam Buddha’s teachings were made thereat. It was further developed by the Chinese scholars. House is planned according to Kuang number of the head of the family. It has five elements: earth, water, air, sky, wood and metal but has no specific importance to God.
North and East directions are considered inauspicious while South and West bring luck because probably China’s geographical situation had mattered. According to Feng-Shui the measures advised to be used as beneficial to the user may turn out to be harmful to the adjoining houses.
On the contrary, Vastushastra is considered as invaluable gift to the mankind. Its elements called Panch-Maha-Bhutas are eternal and common to anybody globally. The elements wood and metal of Feng-Shui are not perpetual. The creator of world called Brahma, the supreme God is very much honoured in Vastushastra and all are treated on par for godsend gains.
Vastushastra is not properly marketed in the world and is made a scapegoat by others with ill-advertising that lot of breakages are required to be made in application of Vastu science. Unfortunately this happened to be wrong propaganda to divert the merits of Vastushastra.
Where you enter, cook, eat, how you sleep, study, bath, socialise, meditate need to be optimally supported by Vastu principles. The efforts may however be made to provide rooms as: bathroom on east, kitchen on southeast, bed on southwest with head on south during sleeping, heavy furniture on south or west, northern and eastern portion may be scatter-free space, dining on northwest, treasury on north and prayer room on northeast. A fountain may be placed on northeast and a small lamp on southeast be kept.
