No matter what one'sjob is, the normal questions asked of an unsatisfied employee are: What ails this person? Since he/she is less involved in the job, what factors are responsible for this?

This book, by a Reader in Vinoba Bhave University, Jharkhand, attempts to highlight the importance of job satisfaction, job involvement, performance and organisational effectiveness.

This detailed study examines the level of job involvement among high school teachers and relates it with individual and organisational factors, such as their value preference, identification with their institution/organisation, job satisfaction, job characteristics and physical abilities available in the school.

A job-involved person is one for whom work is a very important part of life (a central life interest) and one who is personally affected by one'swhole job situation, the work itself, one'sco-workers, the organisation, etc. On the other hand, non-job involvement worker does the majority of his living off the job. Work is not as important a part of his psychological life. His interests are in some other area and the care of his self-image, the essence of his identity, is not greatly affected by the kind of work he does or how well he does it.

It has however been seen that situational factors influence an individual'sjob involvement. When organisations fail to recognise the development of desire for independence, deeper interest, awareness of self, their progress gets halted. Organisations should give sufficient attention to designing work that allows individuals working in them to be treated as mature individuals. The employee'spersonal characteristics, needs, attitudes and abilities play a significant role in moderating the effect of stress-inducing features of job roles.

The author of this study shows by citing the findings of various researches undertaken and stresses that institutions/organisations work for their own benefit, develop work designs and individual capacities which help in increasing their performance as well as organisational effectiveness while maintaining tradition and culture and providing for further development of the organisation along new directions.

This book will be useful to researchers, administrators and human resource workers interested in keeping the workers involved and satisfied with their jobs and thus helping in their organisation'seffectiveness.
