A messenger of peace

The Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev spread the message of brotherhood, peace and oneness of God. He guided many people to follow the path of truth and righteous living and this won him many disciples and devotees, including the Hindus and the Muslims.

On attaining the age of 70, he appointed his disciple Bhai Lahna as his successor, giving him the name of Guru Angad Dev.

When Guru Nanak left this world, his Hindus and Muslim devotees entered into a controversy as the Hindus wanted to cremate him while the Muslims insisted on burying him. They continued arguing and went to the place where Guru Nanak'sbody lay at rest. One of the disciples pulled away the sheet to pay his respect to the Guru and to their amazement found the body of Guru Nanak missing from there. The Guru'sbody was nowhere to be found; in its place flowers lay strewn all around. The devotees, both the Hindus and the Muslims, were shocked at the sight and decided that it was for the best that such a thing had happened. This was possibly Guru Nanak Dev'sway of saying that he was neither a Muslim nor a Hindu; he was essentially a messenger of peace.  ?M.G.
