Psychologists say that there are three states in which a human being exists?the working state, the sleeping state and the dreaming state. Perhaps psychology stopped a little short when we find that our ancient sages spoke of a fourth state of intense concentration beyond these three?the world within. In a constant state of superficial existence, we continue to ignore the world within. In our persistent chase after shadow shapes and worldly wealth, we lose sight of our inner consciousness.? We appreciate speech, action and outward show, forgetting that there is a far more valuable aspect of life which includes reflection, contemplation, introspection.
Sage Patanjali had warned about the antarayas or obstacles encountered on the path of yoga and meditation. These include illness which is an impediment in meditation. He listed a number of points for initiating persons in meditation and yoga.
Patanjali wanted that meditation should not be taught to those who lacked emotional balance and maturity. Negative state of mind like arrogance, anger, hostility and hatred can never be conducive to meditation.
Lethargy or tamas due to overeating, over-indulgence or occasionally extreme weather conditions made us feel ?heavy? in body and mind preventing us from doing anything useful or constructive.
J.P. Vaswani explains what meditation is. It begins with relaxation by lying in a comfortable position to inhale and exhale slowly; the meditation techniques and the sutras which are thoughts for mediation. It is no wonder that meditation is regarded as the most powerful tool for healing as it alters the activity of the nervous system in such a way that the creative energy of the individual gets recharged. In other words, meditation quickens the emotions, sharpens observation power and helps to perform our tasks with greater efficiency.
