Dr V.P. Sharma, an advocate of Supreme Court of India, has filed a writ petition in the apex court seeking directions to the Government of India to stop the dredging and destruction of Ram Sethu forthwith in deference to the sentiments of crores of Hindus and also in consideration of the economic and scientific aspects. The petition has been filed on May 8. Dr Sharma has also sought the constitution of a committee of specialised persons belonging to various fields to sort out some alternative ways in place of the dredging and destroying of Ram Sethu. Dr Sharma is also an advocate in the Ramjanmabhoomi case representing the Hindus.
In his petition Dr Sharma said that the pyramids of Egypt are about 4,500 years old and the Great Wall of China is also just about 2,600 years old, whereas the Ram Sethu is about 18 lakh years old as per the scriptural evidence and is an international heritage within the purview of UNESCO laws.
He said the dredging and breaking of Ram Sethu would result in catastrophe, in case a tsunami attacks the coast of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as earlier 2,00,000 lives have already been taken by the tsunami. Since the Ram Sethu has a rich production of thorium, the dredging has not been carried out with the consultation of the expertise in the field. He alleged that the dredging is being carried out under the foreign influence of America to make their navigation shorter of distance. He said various alternatives are available and the objectives can be achieved without dredging and destructing the Ram Sethu. "(FOC)
