Law doesn'talways take the right course. It is more abused than used in proper and just way. Such an incident occurred in Orissa, in which the innocent people fighting for the protection of their moral rights, have been jailed.

Such a condemnable incident occurred at Berhampur township of Ganjam District, where 39 people opposing illegal cow slaughter have been jailed, whereas the real culprits have been set free, because they are all Muslims. According to sources, two persons, belonging to the Muslim community, were carrying a bagful of beef in Berhampur township. Getting political patronage and help of local administration, the supply of beef and killing cattles have become their regular activities in Berhampur. In spite of several protests, they managed to carry on with their activities, even in broad daylight. On that day, while carrying beef, the bag fell down on the street and the incident came to light. Local people protested it and culprits managed to flee. Later, an FIR was lodged in the police station and their arrest was demanded. Surprisingly, police did not take any action against the beef-suppliers, though their conduct deserved punishment under different penal provisions of Indian Penal Code and Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and also under the Animal Cruelty Act of the state. Callousness of police made the Go-bhaktas angry, and they conducted a protest show.

The rally was going on peacefully. But the incident took an ugly turn when a number of Muslims, being armed with lathis, swords and axes attacked them. Eyewitness say that when the Hindus were on a peaceful demonstration, Muslim goons attacked them from both the sides. Hindus were unarmed and many innocent Hindus sustained severe injuries. A complaint was lodged in the police station, but nobody was arrested . On the other hand, Muslims filed a false FIR against the Hindus, which made the local police active to arrest 39 innocent Hindus. Now all are behind the bars. Although, no cow poacher and beef-supplier has yet been arrested.

Police say that basing upon a video cassette, these 39 person have been arrested. But they fumble to answer as to why Muslim goons, who attacked the Hindus in the broad daylight were left. Although the pictures of these armed goons are visible from that same video.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad protested vehemently against the incident . A mammoth rally was organised in the township, in which about 1000 people took part. Swami Laxmananandaji Saraswati addressed the public meeting. A memorandum was submitted to the administration demanding for a ban on cow slaughter in the township, and for immediate release of arrested Hindus. VHP'scentral secretary Shri Y. Raghavallu condemned the incident in strong words saying: ?The administration is encouraging illegal cow slaughter and widening the gap between Hindus and Muslims?. He was speaking at a press conference in Berhampur.
