The broad daylight killing of RSS Vibhag Karyavah, Sukleswar Medhi, by ULFA terrorists in Nalbari district of Assam, about 65 km from Guwahati, on August 30 has led to sharp reactions from the general public as well as from the Sangh and its associated organisations. In protest different organisations of the Sangh under the banner of the Lok Jagaran Manch observed a statewide dawn-to-dusk bandh on September 1.

Meanwhile, the ULFA has also threatened noted journalist of Assam Shri D. N. Bezboruah to mend his ways or face the ?wrath of the masses?. The ULFA has accused Shri Bezboruah of running a hate-ULFA campaign. The warning, issued through e-mail, had been made by ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa. The e-mail refers to Shri Bezboruah'srecent column in The Sentinel, in which he has ridiculed ULFA'spromise of a democratic set-up in its ?Independent Asom?.

According to police, Sukleswar Medhi, a school teacher, was shot dead by terrorists when he was riding a bicycle to his school in Balitara Dhomdhoma village under Ghograpar police station of undivided Nalabari district at around 10 a.m. According to reports Army jawans shot dead one of the two assailants while they were fleeing. Medhi is the second RSS leader in the district who has been killed by ULFA terrorists. A senior Sangh activist was shot dead in June 1990. Top police officials from the district headquarters rushed to the spot immediately after the killing and investigation is on. Police picked up several persons from the area for interrogation.

Meanwhile, the RSS-associated organisations reacted sharply to the incident and termed it as part of the terrorists? design to target the nationalist forces. Shri V. Satish, BJP'sin-charge of the Northeastern states, reacting to the incident said: ?The killing of the RSS activist by the ultras is shocking and condemnable. It reflected the fact that certain forces were wary of the Sangh Parivar making steady inroads into Assam politics. Nalbari division is one of the strongholds of the RSS in the State. We demand prompt action by the police to nab the killers.?

Shri Satish severely criticised the Congress government in Assam for failing to provide protection to the citizens. ?We will not take it lying down and will continue to fight against terrorists and such acts of terrorism,? he added.

Shri S. Bhattacharjee, Assam BJP spokesman, said the party President LK Advani met the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi to express his concern over the killing of the Sangh activist. It may be mentioned that the banned ULFA has of late become very critical of the BJP, which it has branded as a communal party and asked the people of Assam to beware of the party'sdesign to create communal division in the State.
