?The government alone cannot bring about required qualitative improve-ments in education unless the whole society comes forward to support the cause. Only that education system can be considered complete in which every child gets equal opportunity and atmosphere conducive to education. This is a change that the present education system has failed to bring about and it should be replaced with a new India-oriented system,? said Prof. Jagmohan Singh Rajput, Director, NCERT. He was delivering the eleventh Bhaurao Deoras memorial lecture in Lucknow recently. He said, ?Every member of the society should think why the ?public? children do not get admission in ?public schools? where qualitative education is provided. The whole society should be held responsible for children who fail due to lack of resources and a positive atmosphere.?
Dr Rajput emphasised the need to abandon the tendency of looking at the West for an education system when our culture and legacy abounds in the mode of imparting qualitative education. He said, ?The changes brought about by NCERT in the education system during the tenure of the previous govern-ment were meant to fulfill the aim of qualitative education. The country and the society should decide on what education they want to provide to their children.? Dr Rajput however stressed on the need to review the system after every five years and institute changes which are need based.
The lecture was presided over by Prof. Krishn Behari Pandey, former Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. Dr S.C. Rai, Mayor of Lucknow, Prof. Devendra Pratap Singh, Vice Chancellor of Rajrishi P.D. Tandon University and Dr Surya Kara of K.G.M.U. were among the other educationists who attended the lecture. Shri Brahmdev Sharma ?Bhaiji?, Trustee of Bhaurao Deoras Trust, honoured Prof. Rajput by presenting him a memento, a coconut and an angavastra. (FOC)
