IIT Delhi Student Suicide: Administration Offered Semester Withdrawal, Treatment Support Before Tragedy
NEW DELHI: An MSc Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi died by suicide on August 22, days after submitting a request for semester withdrawal, with the institute saying that it had extended academic flexibility, counselling and treatment-related support to him in the months preceding his death
The student, who had enrolled in the MSc Physics programme in 2025, had performed well academically in his first semester, securing an SGPA of 8.2. According to the institute’s account, concerns about his behaviour and health emerged in March 2026, following which he was advised to seek psychiatric consultation at the IIT Delhi hospital and was subsequently referred to VIMHANS for further treatment.
The institute said the student later sought semester withdrawal and that his request was granted even after the prescribed deadline. He returned to the campus in August with his mother and approached the Associate Dean (Hostel) seeking hostel accommodation. Following consultation with a counsellor, however, he was advised to continue with his treatment. He did not subsequently return with another request for hostel accommodation, according to the institute.
In the days preceding his death, the student also discussed his academic plans with the Head of the Department of Physics. He initially sought guidance regarding project allocation but later expressed a desire to leave the programme, saying that he did not find the course interesting and wanted to start tuition classes instead.
The matter was subsequently discussed with the Associate Dean (Academics), where the student and his mother expressed differing views about his future. While the student wanted to leave the programme, his mother wanted him to continue. The administration said the student was eventually persuaded to opt for semester withdrawal instead.
He submitted the semester withdrawal application on the evening of August 20. He died by suicide on the morning of August 22.
The sequence of events has brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. However, the available details do not by themselves establish the cause of his suicide or attribute it to any particular individual or institution. The institute’s account indicates that the student had been receiving support for his reported health concerns and had been given academic flexibility, including semester withdrawal.
The student joined IIT Delhi’s MSc Physics programme in 2025 and recorded an SGPA of 8.2 in the first semester. According to the institute, an incident involving violent behaviour was reported in March 2026, amid concerns that he might have been consuming substances.
Following the incident, he was advised to consult a psychiatrist at the IIT Delhi hospital. He was later referred to VIMHANS for further treatment.
He subsequently applied for semester withdrawal. The institute approved the request despite the deadline having passed, allowing him to step away from the semester and focus on his circumstances.
In August, the student returned to the institute accompanied by his mother and approached the Associate Dean (Hostel) seeking accommodation.
The Associate Dean consulted a counsellor, who, according to the institute, found that the student was not in good health and persuaded him to continue with treatment. The student did not return with a subsequent request for hostel accommodation.
During the visit, the student and his mother also had an argument, according to the institute’s account.
Around the same period, the IIT Delhi student met the Head of the Physics Department regarding project allocation. He was advised either to join an existing research group or identify a new research problem.
About a week later, he met the department head again and said that he wanted to resign from the course as he no longer found it interesting. He expressed an intention to start tuition classes.
The student and his mother subsequently met the Associate Dean (Academics). According to the institute, the student wanted to leave the programme, while his mother wanted him to continue his studies. The administration eventually persuaded him to opt for semester withdrawal.
On August 20, the student submitted his application for semester withdrawal.
Two days later, on August 22, he died by suicide.
The sequence provided by the institute shows that the student had sought both medical and academic assistance before his death. It also indicates that his request for semester withdrawal had been facilitated by the administration. At the same time, the circumstances surrounding any suicide are complex, and the timeline alone cannot establish a single cause for the tragedy.
The incident has once again underlined the importance of timely mental-health support for students facing academic, personal or behavioural difficulties, while also highlighting the need for institutions and families to work together when students show signs of distress.
