New Delhi: Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce and cloud computing company, is facing a fresh political and regulatory challenge in the United States after the Senate Small Business Committee launched an investigation into allegations that individuals linked to its operations in China may have improperly influenced decisions on the company’s online marketplace.

The probe follows reports suggesting that Amazon employees in China were allegedly involved in a shadow network that offered favours to third-party sellers in exchange for money, raising concerns over the integrity of one of the world’s largest digital marketplaces.

According to reports, Republican aides on the Senate Small Business Committee have uncovered what they describe as “compelling evidence” of possible Amazon negligence related to Chinese influence. An email sent by a committee researcher to an Amazon seller stated that investigators had identified evidence warranting further examination, although it did not specify the alleged misconduct.

The investigation appears to have been triggered by earlier reports exposing an illicit marketplace in which intermediaries allegedly promised Amazon sellers privileged access to company insiders. These middlemen reportedly contacted merchants through platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp and WeChat, particularly during commercially critical periods including Prime Day sales and the holiday shopping season. In return for payments, they allegedly offered services ranging from resolving account suspensions to improving product visibility and securing favourable treatment within Amazon’s marketplace systems.

One of the central cases under examination involves Staten Island-based merchant Jack Nekhala. According to reports, Nekhala recorded conversations with an intermediary who appeared to possess confidential information from his Amazon seller account. The intermediary allegedly claimed to have connections with Amazon employees in China and offered to arrange internal assistance in exchange for payment. Investigators are reportedly examining how employees based in China could potentially influence decisions affecting sellers across Amazon’s global marketplace.

Questions over marketplace governance and global oversight

The allegations strike at the core of Amazon’s third-party marketplace, where independent sellers account for nearly 60 per cent of all products sold on the platform. For years, many merchants have complained about abrupt account suspensions, inconsistent enforcement of marketplace rules and limited opportunities to appeal penalties. Such frustrations are believed to have fuelled demand for intermediaries claiming access to Amazon’s internal decision-making processes.

The Senate investigation adds to a growing list of regulatory pressures facing Amazon, including ongoing antitrust scrutiny and allegations of deceptive business practices in the United States and other jurisdictions. Amazon has denied wrongdoing in those cases and has consistently maintained that it works to protect the integrity of its marketplace while investigating abuse by bad actors.

The latest probe could nevertheless deepen concerns among both consumers and sellers regarding the fairness of Amazon’s marketplace operations. Lawmakers may seek company documents, internal communications or testimony from Amazon executives as part of the investigation, while also considering possible policy reforms aimed at strengthening oversight of digital marketplaces.

Beyond the immediate political implications in Washington, the allegations have wider significance for global e-commerce. The controversy raises broader questions about how multinational online platforms monitor overseas operations, prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that marketplace rules are enforced consistently regardless of geography.

For countries such as India, where millions of businesses increasingly depend on digital marketplaces for commercial access, the investigation highlights the importance of transparent governance, credible grievance redressal mechanisms and robust safeguards against preferential treatment in cross-border digital commerce.
