In one of the largest public recitations of the Bhagavad Gita ever held in West Bengal, more than 6.5 lakh participants gathered for the ‘Panch Lakkho Konthe Gita Path’ programme, organised by the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad. Sadhus, devotees, and families from across Bengal and neighbouring states filled the grounds from early morning, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.

The event, built around a collective recitation by five lakh voices, drew an even larger turnout than expected, organisers said. Three massive stages, extensive crowd-control arrangements, and stepped-up security were put in place to manage the unprecedented footfall.

Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal attended the programme and addressed the gathering. In his message, he said the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita holds immense significance across spiritual, philosophical, and cultural domains. Describing it as the “Song of God”, he said the scripture “percolates every aspect of life”, offering guidance for selfless action and purpose-driven living.

He added that the Gita continues to inspire citizens in discharging their duties towards society and the nation.

His remarks were also shared through an official post on X:

Religious figures including Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj (Kartik Maharaj), Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham, and Swami Gyananandaji Maharaj of the Geeta Manishi Mahamandal were present. Several sadhus lead the chanting.

The Brigade Parade Ground, frequently a venue for large political rallies, transformed into a sea of saffron as sadhus and Hindus chanted shlokas in unison. Attendees held up copies of the Bhagavad Gita as the verses echoed across the vast space.

BJP leader Amit Malviya described the gathering as “a historic spectacle”, calling the turnout “extraordinary” and “rooted in pure devotion”.

Organisers from the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad said the initiative aimed to highlight Bengal’s deep spiritual heritage and promote harmony. Secretary Swami Nirgunananda noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had been invited but had not confirmed her attendance.

Responding to questions about the recent foundation-laying of a “Babri Masjid-style” structure by suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir in Murshidabad, Sadhvi Ritambhara, who attended the event, said: “There is no foundation of Babar or Babri in this country. One can build a structure of bricks, but one cannot make Babur reside in the heart. This nation belongs to Ram. It will always belong to Ram. Only Bhagwa will prevail here. This is the eternal truth.”

Swami Gyananandaji Maharaj led the spiritual component of the ceremony, emphasising the Gita’s message of clarity amid social tensions. Kartik Maharaj said that in “a climate of division”, mass recitation provides both direction and emotional grounding.
