Kanchipuram: In a deeply spiritual and momentous ceremony that drew saints, scholars, and devotees from across the country, Duddu Satya Venkata Surya Subrahmanya Ganesha Sharma Dravid, a 25-year-old Rig Vedic scholar from Andhra Pradesh, was anointed as the 71st Shankaracharya of the historic Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. The grand event, which took place on the sacred day of Akshaya Tritiya, was marked by traditional Vedic rituals and an atmosphere of devotion and reverence.

The new seer, now to be known as Satya Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya, received Sanyasa Deeksha from the current pontiff, Jagadguru Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya, during the Sanyasa Sweekara Mahotsavam—a solemn and ancient ceremony of spiritual initiation. Devotees lovingly refer to him as the “Pudu Periyava,” meaning “New Elder.”

The event was held at the sacred Pancha Ganga Teertham within the Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Ambal Devasthanam, where rituals had been underway since April 22. A series of poorvanga kriyas (preliminary ceremonies), including special pujas at the Kamakshi Ambal Sannidhi and Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya Sannidhi, were conducted leading up to the final initiation. These concluded on April 29 with great fanfare and spiritual energy that enveloped the temple city of Kanchipuram.

As part of the initiation, the new Shankaracharya took a holy dip in the temple pond, before donning saffron robes and accepting the danda (staff of authority), symbolizing his entry into sanyasa—the renounced order of life. The rituals were accompanied by the resounding chants of “Hara Hara Sankara, Jaya Jaya Sankara,” filling the air with divine vibrations. His parents, Srinivasa Surya Subramanya Dhanvantari and Alamelu Manga Devi, watched the transformation with pride and devotion from the temple steps.

Born in 2001 in Thuni village near Annavaram in the Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh, the new pontiff demonstrated exceptional spiritual inclination from a young age. He pursued advanced studies in Vedic literature, Upanishads, Shadangas, and the complete Rig Veda, earning accolades as a learned Rig Vedic scholar. His ordination signifies the seamless continuation of the unbroken lineage of spiritual leadership at the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, which traces its roots back over 2,500 years to Adi Shankaracharya.

Following the formal announcement of his succession a few days prior, thousands of devotees flocked to Kanchipuram to witness this rare and historic occasion. The city brimmed with devotional fervor, and arrangements were made for devotees to attend the rituals in person or via live stream.

During the ceremony, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal remarked, “On Akshaya Tritiya, people offer wealth to the needy. But today, his parents have offered their son to the mutt — a priceless donation for the service of Sanatana Dharma, the Vedas, and the nation.”

As the newly ordained Satya Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya steps into his sacred role, he will guide spiritual seekers alongside the 70th Acharya, upholding the philosophies and teachings of Advaita Vedanta and preserving the timeless traditions of the Peetam. His youthful energy and scholarly depth bring hope to millions that the Mutt’s legacy will continue to shine brightly for generations to come.
