Journalist injured in indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants in trouble-hit Manipur. While covering the attacks in Thamnapokpi, Imphal East, early on December 28 morning, a video journalist suffered a left leg injury. The reporter, identified as Kavichandra from the regional media network Impact TV, was sent to an Imphal hospital for additional care. He was hit by a bullet fired by Kuki militants from a hilltop targeting Meitei villages in the down. Valley.
Since December 27, Kuki insurgents have been attacking Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi, among other outlying areas, from the hilltops of Kangpokpi district and also targeting valley villages in the Imphal East district.
On December 27, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh denounced the “indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants” on two villages in the Imphal East district. According to police accounts, the incident injured one police officer and another person. The villages of Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi were the targets of the shooting, which purportedly came from the hills. The chief minister condemned the attack in a post on X (previously Twitter), describing it as a “cowardly and unprovoked” attack on innocent life.
“We firmly condemn the Kuki militants’ indiscriminate firing at Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi in Imphal East, which resulted in injuries to both security personnel and civilians.” CM Singh added, “This unjustified and cowardly attack on innocent lives is an assault on peace and harmony.” He called for appropriate coordination in such circumstances between state police and central forces. The impacted areas have received a rapid influx of security personnel. The chief minister said, “The government calls for calm and unity in the face of such challenges, and the injured are receiving the necessary medical assistance.”
It should be mentioned that Kuki militants have been increasing attacks on Meitri villages since midnight of December 25. But on December 27, the firing reached the top when the militants fired on several Meitei villages from the hilltop, which forced scared villagers to flee from the villages. The firing continues till the morning of December 28. Large numbers of security forces have been deployed in the area. But taking advantage of the dense forest and hilly terrain, the militants are continuously targeting the valley Meitei villages. Kuki militants also used long-range bomb launchers for bombing in the Meitei villages on December 27.
