In another irritant for Bharat, a Canadian Border Police officer, Sandeep Singh Sidhu alias Sunny Singh has been cleared of terrorism charges by the Canadian authorities.
Singh was charged by Bharat for acts of terror and had even raised the same with the Canadian authorities. The authorities however denied that he was involved in any acts of terror. After a brief round of investigation, the Canadian authorities cleared Singh of any charge and also reinstated him into the force.
The development comes in the wake of the ties between India and Canada hitting an all time low. The row erupted after Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau made brash and baseless allegations against India. He said that the Indian authorities were behind the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist on Canadian soil.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that Singh had been cleared following an investigation.
Singh, according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also a member of the banned International Sikh Youth Federation. He has been associated with Khalistani terror groups and also is close contact with the notorious ISI.
Sandeep Singh Sidhu is also known as Sunny Toronto. He was added to the list of fugitives, following which Bharat had sought his extradition in October this year. After it was pointed out that Singh was on the terror list, he was shunned from his frontline job for a brief period. In October the Canadian authorities admitted that Singh was on their payroll, but were quick to add that he is not involved in any act of terror.
In October the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had conducted polygraph tests on him. The same month the agency said that they had found nothing to back the claims and reinstated him.
“I have been through a year-long investigation where they’ve talked to my family, they’ve talked to my coworkers, they’ve gone through my financial statements, they’ve gone through my bank statements, my telephone records,” Sidhu said to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
He also said that he was born and raised in Prince George, British Colombia. He also added that the last time he had visited India was in 2018 for a wedding.
The NIA has accused him of assassinating Comrade Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a Shaurya Chakra awardee. Sandhu was a school teacher and was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his fight against Khalistani terrorists in Punjab in the 11990s. He had also spoken out against the referendums that have been issued by these Khalistani elements such as the Sikhs for Justice.
Sandeep Singh Sidhu had along with the ISI agents lured the assassin of Balwinder Singh Sandhu with the assurance of money and a home in Canada. The NIA had informed the Supreme Court that the operatives of the banned Khalistan Liberation Force had carried out this murder.
The NIA in its dossier said that Sandeep Singh Sidhu was also involved in promoting terrorism in Punjab. He is closely linked with Lakhbir Singh Rode, who is
based in Pakistan. Rode is the nephew of Khalistan leader, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
This development will irk New Delhi further as Sunny Toronto joins the long list of terrorists whose deportation has been rejected.
