Chhattisgarh: Tribal woman gang-raped in Raigharh’s Pusaur, six people arrested

Six individuals have been arrested in Raigarh's Pusaur area following the alleged gang-rape of a tribal woman on the eve of Rakshabandhan. The victim, who was en route to a festival, was abducted and assaulted by the suspects before they fled the scene

Police arrested six people for their involvement in an alleged sexual assault at the Pusaur Police Station area in Raigharh on August 20.

In the harrowing incident that took place on the eve of Rakshabandhan, the Raigarh police reported that a group of youths allegedly abducted the tribal woman and took her near a pond to sexually assault her.

According to the police, the woman was on her way to attend a festival in Raigarh when the incident took place.

“The woman had left her village to go to a festival in Raigarh when a group of men forcefully abducted her and sexually assaulted her. As soon as were informed we started investigating the matter”, said Divyang Patel, Raigarh Superintendent of Police. The assault took place twenty kilometres away from the district headquarters, police added.

The accused, however, fled the scene after the incident, said the police, adding that the woman managed to reach her home and informed her family members.

The complaint was lodged by the woman at Pusaur police station on August 20. The Superintendent of Police said that the police swung into action as soon as they were informed of the incident.

According to the police, the accused was identified, and the team interrogated the accused and took them into custody.

“As soon as we were informed of the incident we registered a case, formed an investigating team to probe the matter and we have arrested the six accused”, said Patel.

The police confirmed that a medical examination of the woman was conducted as per protocol and that the woman’s situation is stable now.
