Assam: “Rohingya infiltration in India has increased at an alarming level,” says CM Himanta Biswa

Guwahati: Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on July 31 stated that the threat of a demographic invasion is genuine and grave and that Rohingya infiltration into India has considerably grown which is at an alarming level. At a press conference held in Guwahati, CM Sarma stated, “Rohingyas are continuously coming into India using the India-Bangladesh border and many states are suffering from the demographic invasion.”

He said that although Assam is only covering a portion of the Indo-Bangladesh border, a sizable portion is still permeable. He claimed that the governments of West Bengal and Jharkhand are being soft on these infiltrators and have not taken any steps to put an end to it. According to CM Sarma, “the chief minister of West Bengal actually made a statement stating that the state will provide shelter to people fleeing Bangladesh, even though the government of the neighbouring country has not endorsed it.”

Assam’s chief minister posted on the X handle, saying, “It surprises me that the honourable chief minister of Bengal is urging infiltrators from the neighbouring countries to enter the country. The Congress refuses to acknowledge that Assam’s demographics are shifting. You can uncover the truth by examining the voter lists for 2019 and 2024.” According to him, the governments of Assam and Tripura have taken decisive action in this regard, with police in both states apprehending several Rohingya infiltrators on multiple occasions. Because we don’t have a soft approach, Assam is no longer a safe haven for Rohingyas. Our circumstances have not become worse since the BJP administration took office, and they are still better than those of West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Meanwhile, MEA Joint Secretary said in Tripura that while cross-border infiltration, particularly by Rohingyas, is a “very serious” problem, another concerning tendency is also becoming apparent. Ankan Banerjee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs said can you imagine Rohingyas in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. They are in large numbers in Hyderabad. So its a threat to security and a major worry regarding Rohingya infiltration.
