NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh. Purohit, 83, cited personal reasons for his decision to step down from his position, which he conveyed to the President in a brief letter earlier this year.
Purohit, who assumed the role of Punjab Governor in September 2021, had a four-year tenure as the Governor of Tamil Nadu prior to his appointment in Punjab. However, his time in Punjab was marred by frequent clashes with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, particularly regarding the approval of various legislations by the Punjab Raj Bhawan.
The AAP government, including the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, and official spokespersons, often accused Purohit of being biased towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and conspiring against their administration. This led to a strained relationship between the Governor and the state government.
Alongside accepting Purohit’s resignation, President Murmu also announced the appointment of six new governors and reshuffled three existing ones in different states. These changes aim to bring fresh perspectives and effective governance to the respective regions.
(i) Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde appointed as Governor of Rajasthan
(ii) Jishnu Dev Varma appointed as Governor of Telangana
(iii) Om Prakash Mathur appointed as Governor of Sikkim
(iv) Santosh Kumar Gangwar appointed as Governor of Jharkhand
(v) Ramen Deka appointed as Governor of Chhattisgarh
(vi) C H Vijayashankar appointed as Governor of Meghalaya
(vii) C.P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Jharkhand with Additional Charge of Telangana, appointed as Governor of Maharashtra
(viii) Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Assam, appointed as Governor of Punjab and has also been appointed as Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh
(ix) Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, appointed as Governor of Assam and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur. The above appointments will take effect from the dates they will assume charge of their respective offices.
The new appointments and reshuffles reflect a strategic move to address administrative needs and enhance governance across the country.
