Manipur marred by violence
Imphal: In a series of violent attacks, several houses belonging to Meiteis and Bishnupriyas in Borobekra, Jiribam subdivision, were bombed and set ablaze around 1:30 AM on June 25 by Kuki-Hmar-Zo terrorists. Tje motive behind the attack seems to completely wiped out Meitei areas in the Jiribam district. This act of terror follows the destruction of the only Meitei guest house in the area just three days earlier.
The guest house, owned by Tongbram Sobhash Singh, son of the late T Angouba Singh, was renowned for its organic certification and sustainable practices. The property served as a hub for two pioneering companies in organic farming, Leishembi Private Limited and Matik Mangaal Private Limited. These companies have been instrumental in promoting organic agriculture in Jiribam, providing significant employment opportunities to the Meiteis, and contributing to the local economy and sustainable development, local media Manipur Times reported.
This senseless violence not only destroys a business but also disrupts the livelihoods of many, delivering a severe blow to the community and its efforts to foster organic farming. The need for safety and security for the Meiteis in Jiribam is now more urgent than ever.
COCOMI to Organise “Manipur Kanba Khongchat” Rally
In response to these escalating tensions and separate state demands by Kuki groups, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has announced plans to organise a rally titled “Manipur Kanba Khongchat” on June 28, 2024, at 9:00 AM. The rally will commence from Thangmeiband Thao Ground and proceed to Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.
COCOMI is urging elected members, including MLAs, ministers, bureaucrats, government officials, and civil society organisations (CSOs), to join the rally. Y. Lairikleima, Coordinator of the COCOMI Women Wing, has strongly opposed the demands of the 10 Kuki MLAs and their supporters for a separate homeland within Manipur, stressing that the 34 communities residing in the state would resist any move to meet these demands.
