Guwahati: In a landmark development for Assam’s educational sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati. This pivotal decision, announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, places Assam among the elite group of cities hosting prestigious institutions like IITs, AIIMS, National Law Universities, and now, an IIM.
Chief Minister Sarma shared the momentous news via X, stating, “Sharing BIG NEWS! Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, National Law Univ & now IIM (s.i.c).”
This achievement follows 18 months of persistent efforts and strategic lobbying by Assam’s leadership. The state government led by the CM himself presented a strong case to the Education Ministry and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Assam not only provided prime land but also committed extensive logistical support, showcasing its dedication to educational excellence.
A pivotal letter dated April 10 from P.K. Banerjee, Joint Secretary, addressed to the Director of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, confirmed the state government’s offer of a 76.8332-hectare plot at Marabhita, near Guwahati. This plot, free of cost and all encumbrances, is situated in an area with robust infrastructure and industrial connections. The selection committee has approved IIM Ahmedabad as the Mentor Institute for this new IIM.
In earlier communications with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in April 2023, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the strategic benefits of an IIM in Assam. He emphasised the potential for economic growth in the North Eastern Region, given Assam’s diverse industrial base and proximity to South Asian markets.
On June 2, Chief Minister Sarma underscored the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, “This will be a game-changer for Assam, making the State an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfil our economic aspirations.” He envisions a synergistic environment where premier institutions and industries collaborate, fostering innovation and growth through multidisciplinary education.
The swift realisation of this initiative underscores the effectiveness of the collaborative approach between the central and state governments. Chief Minister Sarma expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Education Minister Pradhan for their pivotal roles in actualizing this vision.
