Guwahati: The Indian Army’s commitment extends beyond national security, reaching into environmental stewardship. This dedication was on full display in Assam’s Sonitpur district on May 17, as the Territorial Army launched a mass plantation drive to mark the Platinum Jubilee Year of the Territorial Army, spanning from 1949 to 2024.
The Territorial Army (TA), known for providing vital operational and logistical support during natural calamities and national emergencies, has a storied history of service. Celebrating 75 years of excellence, the TA is spearheading a series of initiatives to honour its legacy and future.
The 134th Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Ecological, Assam, also known as the 134 Ecological Task Force (ETF), kicked off the Platinum Jubilee celebrations with a significant environmental initiative. On National Endangered Species Day, May 17, 2024, the battalion organised mass plantation drives and awareness programmes in the villages of Gamani, Satai, and Garobasti in the Sonitpur district.
Established in 2007, the 134 ETF was formed to address the pressing issue of deforestation and to restore ecological balance in the Sonitpur and Biswanath districts of Assam. Over the years, the battalion has been instrumental in various environmental conservation efforts, making significant strides in reforestation and community engagement.

The Platinum Jubilee event saw the planting of 5000 fruit-bearing and shade-giving trees across local villages and schools. This initiative aimed to enhance the green cover and contribute to the region’s environmental health.
