Lok Sabha Polls 2024: BJP names 5 candidates from Delhi, Sushma Swaraj’s daughter to contest from New Delhi

In a strategic move ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of candidates for Delhi, introducing significant revisions in its lineup. The party, which secured all 7 Delhi Lok Sabha seats in the last two elections, has opted for changes in the majority of constituencies

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the names of five candidates from Delhi, marking a departure from its previous lineup. The party has introduced notable changes in its candidate selection, with four sitting MPs replaced in the initial list.

The BJP’s decision to revise its candidates for the majority of the seats in the national capital comes as a strategic move to strengthen its electoral prospects. In the last two Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had secured victories in all seven Delhi Lok Sabha seats.

The newly unveiled list of BJP candidates for Delhi includes:

Bansuri Swaraj for New Delhi Constituency: The daughter of the late BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri Swaraj steps into the political arena, marking her debut in electoral politics. Carrying the legacy of her illustrious mother, Bansuri Swaraj brings a familial connection to the BJP’s electoral campaign

Praveen Khandelwal for Chandni Chowk Constituency: A prominent Delhi-based businessman and the founder of the Confederation of All India Traders, Praveen Khandelwal is set to make his electoral debut. Known for his association with trade and commerce, Khandelwal’s entry adds a business perspective to the BJP’s candidate roster.

Manoj Tiwari for Northeast Delhi Constituency: Renowned singer and actor, Manoj Tiwari, who currently serves as a Member of Parliament from North East Delhi, seeks re-election for the third time. Having secured victories in the 2014 and 2019 elections, Tiwari’s continued presence reflects the party’s reliance on a familiar and popular figure.

Ramvir Singh Bidhuri for South Delhi constituency: A sitting MLA from the Badarpur assembly constituency, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri is a seasoned political figure. With prior legislative experience, Bidhuri’s candidature contributes an element of continuity and local representation.

Kamaljeet Sehrawat has been awarded a ticket for the West Delhi constituency. She was the south delhi mayor of BJP in 2017.

Notably, Ramesh Bidhuri, the BJP’s sitting MP from South Delhi, and Meenakshi Lekhi, MP from New Delhi, have been excluded from the party’s initial candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Among the announced candidates, only Manoj Tiwari has received a renomination for 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, signalling a shift in the party’s strategy and the introduction of fresh faces in key constituencies.

However, the BJP is yet to finalise candidates for the North Delhi and East Delhi seats, keeping the political landscape in Delhi dynamic and anticipatory.

The introduction of new candidates and the replacement of sitting MPs reflect the BJP’s concerted effort to adapt to evolving electoral dynamics and ensure a competitive edge in Delhi’s political arena.

As the countdown to the Lok Sabha 2024 elections begins, the BJP’s initial candidate list sets the stage for an engaging and closely contested electoral battle in the national capital, with the party aiming to retain its stronghold while embracing strategic changes in its lineup.
