In a spirited speech, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed concerns surrounding the state’s unrest, attributing it to the government’s actions against illegal intruders, a war on drugs, and a biometric campaign targeting illegal immigrants. The Chief Minister vehemently rejected the notion that the BJP had erred in implementing these measures.
Facing scrutiny over the past six months, Singh defended the government’s decision to crack down on illegal immigration, emphasising the importance of protecting Manipur’s unique cultural identity. He questioned whether it was wrong to take action against illegal immigrants, considering the potential threat they pose to the indigenous population.
“My conscience is clear. I am not wrong. BJP is not wrong. The only fault of the BJP is to take up such initiatives to protect the indigenous people of the state,” Singh declared, asserting the party’s commitment to the welfare of Manipur.
Singh speculated on the potential future of the state, suggesting that without the BJP’s interventions, the situation could have worsened significantly in the next decade. He pledged the BJP’s dedication to a united Manipur and argued that no other political entity could ensure the state’s salvation.
“There is no other party that can save the state’s people,” proclaimed the Chief Minister, underscoring the BJP’s accomplishments, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit and the removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from majority valley areas.
Singh also highlighted the support from the central government, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had given approval for fencing approximately 100 kilometres of the Manipur section of the Indo-Myanmar border. He posed a rhetorical question, challenging critics to identify any other party or government that had launched a biometric campaign to identify illegal immigrants.
Singh attributed the current unrest in the state to the consequences of such campaigns, emphasising the need for proactive measures to address critical issues. The Chief Minister’s speech sought to reaffirm the BJP’s commitment to Manipur’s well-being while pushing back against criticism that has intensified in recent months.
As the political landscape in Manipur continues to evolve, Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s impassioned defence of the BJP’s actions sets the stage for a broader debate on the state’s future and the role of the ruling party in shaping it.
It should be mentioned that one of the oldest armed groups of Manipur based in the Imphal valley areas, UNLF recently signed a peace accord with the government of India and decided to join the mainstream. CM Singh said, I am extremely grateful to the union home minister for his commitment in working collaboratively for the betterment of Manipur and playing an instrumental role in bringing the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) to the mainstream through peace talks.His leadership and efforts have played a pivotal role in fostering reconciliation and paving the way for a more peaceful and united future in the Northeast.
