Amid a surge in crime in Bihar, a BJP functionary was stabbed to death by unknown armed assailants late Monday evening near Nahar Sautari village under Nagar police station limits of Purnea district in Bihar.

The deceased shopkeeper has been identified as Rajeev Mehta alias Raj Kumar Mehta, a resident of Jhunni, who was heading towards his home after the day’s work when a group of looters attacked him with knives and injured him gravely.

As per the reports, Rajeev was then rushed to the district hospital and was subsequently referred to a private hospital from where he succumbed to his injuries. The attackers also looted Rajeev’s motorcycle before fleeing the spot.

The last rites of the slain BJP worker were performed on Tuesday (July 25) morning, where the leader of the opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha was also seen in attendance. Sinha also spent some time talking to the kith and kin of the deceased BJP leader.

Later on while Interacting with the media Sinha said that “Nitish Kumar ji, on how many deaths your thirst for power will be fulfilled? You have instilled the Jungle Raj from the backdoor, around a dozen cases of murder took place on a daily basis, what kind of message do you want to be sent out by protecting these people.”

“The state government should request a CBI enquiry in the case. In Purnia an atmosphere of fear and criminals are being promoted, a section of society that wants to live peacefully is in fear today, you tell me for how long they will tolerate this fear, you should resign as you are not competent for power, if justice is not delivered in the case then we will hit the streets for sure”, Sinha added further.

It is to be noted that earlier BJP general secretary of the Jehanabad district unit died after the Patna police commenced a lathi charge on the party’s workers during a protest march against the alleged malpractices in teacher recruitment. Later on, the police claimed that Singh had a cardiac arrest following which he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

However several BJP leaders while lashing out at the Nitish-led Mahagathbandhan have termed the death of Singh as a political murder. The BJP is also running a signature campaign against the state government’s treatment of their workers and has vowed to return the favour in the next assembly election in a democratic manner.
