Three kidnapped youths from Meghalaya rescued by Assam police; 4 kidnappers arrested along with mastermind Habib Ahmed

GUWAHATI: Solving a sensational kidnapping case, Assam police have rescued three persons from Meghalaya from a kidnapper’s gang in the Morigaon district.

Three youths from Meghalaya who were kidnapped by a kidnapper gang in Assam for the ransom of Rs 10 lakh were rescued safely on June 14. Morigaon police, on a confirmed tip off carried out a rescue operation in the Amlighat area under Jagiroad police station in the district on June 14 evening and arrested four gang members of the kidnapper’s gang.

The arrested kidnappers have been identified as Abdul Hannan (Joynagar under Murajhar police station in Hojai district), Habib Ahmed (Charing Pathar under Murajhar police station, Hojai district), Fatir Ahmed (Changmaji under Doboka police station in Hojai district) and driver Manav Jyoti Konwar (Chekoni Gohain Gaon, under Jakhalabandha police station in Nagaon district).

Two members of the gang are still absconding, Morigaon Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das said that a case was registered in Meghalaya by the families of the kidnapped persons. In this regard, Meghalaya police communicated with Morigaon police to rescue the kidnapped persons. SP Hemanta Kumar Das said that the three youths from Meghalaya were invited for a trade deal of dry fish. When they came to seal the dry fish deal, they were taken to a house in the Amlighat area and confined by the kidnapper’s gang. After that, the kidnapper’s gang demanded a ransom of 10 lakhs from the families of the kidnapped persons. The Bolero pickup van bearing registration number ML04D4262 was also sealed by the gang with them,” SP Hemanta Kumar Das said.

The kidnapper’s gang made a video of the kidnapped youths holding flour powder in their hands and threatened them to send the video to the families and hand them over to the police as drug dealers. The gang had snatched away Rs 20,000 and gold rings from the youths, SP Hemanta Kumar Das added.

Initially, the kidnapper’s gang demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom, but it was reduced to Rs 4 lakh after some negotiation, and the kidnapper’s gang even received Rs 29000 via UPI from the family members of the kidnapped youths.

After receiving an alert call from Jowai police station officer-in-charge, Jagiroad police set the phone numbers from where the calls were made to the family members of the kidnapped youths on trace. The officer in charge of Jagiroad police station traced out the three abducted youths from a house at Sindhichar near Amlighat late at night on June 13. The entire rescue operation was conducted on mobile tracking,” SP Hemanta Kumar Das also added.

The rescued youths have been identified as Jolanki Nanglein, Fainali Nanglein and Ribatomi Khalem. The three youths hail from Jowai in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district.
