Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara Subramaniam in a statement has made a scathing attack on the DMK Government led by MK Stalin and Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi for exempting Muslim students studying in Urdu from studying Tamil. He has demanded the government to make Tamil compulsory for all students in Tamil Nadu.

In a press release on February 23, 2022, the Hindu Munnani State President said, “Dravidian politicians, who have produced a generation of Tamil students who cannot read or write Tamil, celebrated International Mother Language Day on Tuesday (February 21). Chief Minister Stalin has stated that the Tamil language will be protected. However, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poiyamozhi has promised the Muslim community that Urdu students will be exempted from Tamil exams. This religious exemption has existed for many years. The Dravidian parties have succeeded in creating a generation that cannot read or write Tamil.”

Subrmaniam said “In the neighboring states, it is not possible to complete school education without knowing the local language. The announcement by the state education minister to exempt students studying Urdu to forego Tamil sheds light on their intentions. Does Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin want to encourage a society that takes pride in not knowing how to read and write Tamil? Dr. Ramadoss, the founder of the PMK, embarked on a journey titled ‘In Search of Tamil’ on February 21. A seach would be made only if it is lost or misplaced. in Tamil Nadu, language Tamil has gone missing. that why he has undertakan a yatra in search of Tamil. If they want to protect Tamil, shouldn’t they support the Central Government’s New Education Policy (NEP), which emphasises mother-tongue and mother-tongue education? But they will not support it.”

Expressing his rage, said, “When they support convent education, which promotes ‘mummy and daddy culture’, where else should we look for Tamil language? We need to look for it in the Bay of Bengal. Tamil people should be aware of the politicians who are doing politics using Tamil language. We urge politicians to not use Tamil for politics anymore. On behalf of Hindu Munnani, we request that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin ensure that all students study Tamil and that education is provided in Tamil.”

Students of Mazharul Uloom Higher Secondary School near Ambur in Vellore District ( a minority Muslim school) Tamil Nadu staged a protest and boycotted classes demanding that they should be permitted to write their Standard X board exams in Urdu in 2019. In a plea challenging the order of the Madras High Court, that refused to quash the Government Order of 2014, which made Tamil paper compulsory in Class 10 state board for all students, the apex court on 20th granted opportunity to the senior counsel representing Tamil Nadu to get instructions with respect to the extension of exemption that was initially made available for the academic year 2020-2022.

Madras HC had exempted students belonging to linguistic minority schools from writing Tamil language papers in class 10 state board examinations for the academic year 2020-2022. The present plea appears that the after the exemption expired.

It stated that the petitioner organisation had accepted it would teach the Tamil language to its student. The State Government has taken an extreme step of removing all minority languages from the list of compulsory languages. It said that the languages which have been removed are the mother tongues of linguistic minorities like Muslims and Telugu and the deprivation from learning the same is in teeth of their fundamental right envisaged by the Constitution of India. The petition said that the State Government could not infringe fundamental rights of the students as per the whims and fancies and their right to choose language at the primary and secondary level should be left to the student and their parents, otherwise it would be a blatant violation of their rights under Article 19,21A, 29 and 30 of the Constituting of India.

Hindu Munnani functionary Rajesh said when it comes to studying Hindi or NEP, the DMK Government stand is quite the opposite and should say, “ we would leave it to the parents and the students. Why this double stand?
