Agartala: Tripura is being used as a corridor for trafficking narcotics to Bangladesh from Myanmar, chief minister Manik Saha revealed this in a press conference in Agartala. CM Saha said that in the recent meeting held with union home minister Amit Shah in Guwahati during his Assam visit, the matter of narcotics smuggling and national security was discussed briefly.  He further said measures would be taken to increase surveillance along the state’s borders and in the international border with Bangladesh. Top level state police and BSF officials were also present in the meeting with the home minister.

CM Saha revealed that, “Narcotics are being sent to Bangladesh from Myanmar via the Indo- Bangladesh border in Tripura.  The drug consignments enter the state through the borders with Assam and Mizoram, despite all-out effort to stop the smuggling,”.

The high-level meeting held in Administrative staff college in Guwahati chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, was attended by chief ministers, chief secretaries and DGPs of northeastern states besides top officials of CAPF.

“This is for the first time, the Union home minister held a meeting on drug trafficking with chief ministers and DGPs of the northeast. Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear that the country will not allow its soil to be used for narcotics smuggling,”  CM Saha said.

CM further added, “ Bangladesh is the prime destination of drug smuggling through Tripura, we need to hold talks with the law enforcement agencies of the neighbouring country. Tripura government requested the union home minister to set up a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office in the state to check the drug menace”, he added.
