Indicating all is not well in the Congress party before the assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi’s closest confidante and president of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev threatened to resign Saturday.
The reason for resentment is ignoring her suggestions in the distribution of tickets for the assembly election in Assam.
Dev was also a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Silchar in Assam from 2014-19.
The voting for the 126-member assembly in Assam is spread over three phases starting March 27. The counting of votes will start on May 2.
Dev is the daughter of veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev.
She was hailed as the core member of Rahul Gandhi’s team.
The Congress party is in alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Badruddin Ajmal for the Assam assembly polls.
Tarun Gogoi, a veteran Congress leader, was the chief minister of Assam from 2001-16. The party lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. Gogoi passed away in November last year at the age of 84.
His son Gaurav Gogoi is also fighting a battle in Assam for his share in state politics.
