Addressing a function, Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson called upon the church to introspect on its mission. He made it a point to begin the speech with a foreword that he was not speaking as the state’s Chief Secretary but as the son of the Church.

Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson IAS hit the headlines last week, not for any administrative reforms, but due to his open communal outburst. Addressing the bicentenary celebrations of the Kottayam Orthodox Theological Seminary, he called upon the church to introspect on its mission.  His call to the audience was to take up the mission of spreading Christianity. He added that it was a Biblical necessity to bring people unto Jesus. Addressing the function, in the presence of the State Governor Justice P Sathasivam, Thomson highlighted the importance of the evangelistic mission. He made it a point to begin the speech with a foreword that he was not speaking as the state’s Chief Secretary but as the son of the Church.
Thomson continued that the ultimate mission of the Church is to spread Christianity and he was thinking of ways to fulfill that mission. Church evangelisation, personal evangelisation and mass evangelisation are the three ways to achieve the goal. Mass evangelisation is possible through Bible conventions; every one can choose the path of personal evangelisation. He explained that gospel means ‘go’ and ‘spell’.
When contacted by the media men, chief secretary maintained that a Christian had every right to speak about Christianity. It is not improper to speak about bringing people to Christianity while holding the post of the Chief Secretary. Everybody enjoys the religious freedom and he also could enjoy it as a person. People of Kerala were taken by surprise to hear this. But, all pseudo secularists prefer to keep mum. Most of the people believe that it would have attracted strict disciplinary actions if similar speech was delivered by a Hindu bureaucrat. BJP and Hindu Aikyavedi leaders are the only ones to protest against the communal Thomson. It is to be noted that Thomson was an accused in the infamous palm oil case of 1992. Therefore, the Opposition had objected to his appointment as the Chief Secretary.                                                   —T Satisan

Women Fit  Only  to Deliver Children : Sunni Cleric

Kerala’s leading Sunni Cleric Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliar says, the concept of gender equality is “un-Islamic”. Women can never be equal to men, ‘they are  only deliver children’; they cannot withstand crises. The chief of All India Sunni Jamiuuathul Ulama added that women have no mental strength and power to control the universe; that power is in the hands of men. He was addressing a students’ camp on November 29.
Musliar continued that women lack courage. For example, women doctors can do general medicine or manage pediatrics; they do not have the courage for major surgeries. Recently he had spoken against women reservation in local self governing bodies. He had even advocated the marriages of minor girls; because it ensures morality and discipline in society.
Back in 2008, Kanthapuram stirred a hornets’ nest in the state by supporting polygamy. Reason was simple: A second wife is biologically justified. Women’s menstrual cycle prevents them from sexual contact fro 5 – 6 days! Therefore, he added, his community would oppose any piece of legislation for curbing polygamy; it is sanctioned by Islam.                                                  —T Satisan
