Intro: If BJP’s membership drive meets its target, it would overtake, the Communist Party of China, the World’s biggest political party with nearly 87 million workers.
Massive victory in 2014 parliamentary elections and historic win in Assembly elections of Maharashtra and Haryana has given renewed confidence and energy to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its karyakartas (members). Buoyed by the recent electoral success, the party is now eyeing to be the world’s biggest political power by reaching every nook and corner of India. For it to happen, the BJP has launched an ambitious membership drive on November 1 to enroll 10 crore new members to the already existing 3.25 crore members. The drive will continue till March 31, 2015.
Though BJP conducts nationwide membership drive every six years, what is new this time is that the membership which earlier costed Rs 5, now has been made free of cost
BJP national secretary and national media convenor, Shrikant Sharma told Organiser that full time members are working at community level to add more and more people to become the member of the party. Workshops are being conducted in the states with the aim to reach at least 6 lakhs villages across India. “Today everybody wants to connect with the party and that’s why party is running this campaign. Our goal is ‘Congress Mukta Bharat’. Anybody who wants to become member of the party can give a missed call on toll-free number 180026622020,” he said.
He added the campaign will focus on youth, women and backward caste. “Youths, women and the backward class have lots of love and affection towards Modiji and even he is doing alot for them. After coming to power, many schemes have been launched and the party is working on many more to make the condition (ignored in the UPA rule) better for Indian citizens. After this drive, we will organise a camp for active members. We want BJP to become the world’s biggest political party,” said BJP’s national secretary.
BJP is focusing on the states where BJP has not been able to reach out to its fullest, i.e. West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Seemandhra, Telangana, and Kerala. In states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and others where the party is strong, the target is to increase its membership by four times.
Launching the membership drive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the digital media to register himself as the first member of the party. He said, “Our country is full of diversity. BJP should also be seen as full of diversity. The bouquet of crores of BJP workers should be such that people from all regions should feel that their flower is also represented in this bouquet”.
Modi appealed BJP workers to work with the same energy as they did in the elections. “To be a part of the BJP, when the party is in power, means that every member has to be a representative of the people. The party must reflect the diversity of the country and workers must reach every nook and corner of the country to register at least one BJP member in every village.”
The party is also eyeing Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand, and will keep no stone unturned to win elections in these states.            Nishant Kumar Azad
