JITHU Mohan (21), a BSc student of SD College, Alappuzha and a member of the junior football team of Kerala, was doused with petrol and burnt to death by the Muslim relatives of the girl, with whom he was in love.
Jithu Mohan living in Charummoodu was in love with his neighbourhood girl Shabana. Her parents and relatives opposed the love affair with a Hindu boy and sent her to her sister’s house in Kodungallur in Thrissur. Her sister’s husband Wahab is a policeman there. Jithu Mohan filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Kerala High Court and the girl was produced there. The Court ordered the girl to go with her relatives. The policeman relative, Wahab, asked Jithu Mohan to come to his house in Kodungallur for discussions on marriage.
Jithu Mohan went to Wahab’s house on September 28 and the girl’s relatives numbering six said, they will get the marriage done, if he converts to Islam. Jithu refused to convert and insisted on marriage. The angered relieves doused petrol on him and set him on fire! A blazing Jithu running on the road, was helped by passers-by to the nearest hospital and them to the General Hospital at Ernakulam. On information by hospital, the Judicial Magistrate came and recorded the statement of Jithu, who was battling for life with 90 per cent burns. Jithu has clearly stated that he was doused with petrol and burnt by policeman Wahab and five other Muslim relatives.
Jithu expired on October 2. The RSS and VHP organised massive protests in Alappuzha and Kodungallur. They kept Jithu’s body on the National Highway and staged dharna on the road immobilising traffic for several hours. Only after DGP promised high level probe, did they remove the body for cremation.
