Swayamsevaks undertake Chitheri train accident relief work
A sleepy village (Chitheri) under Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, around 90 km off Chennai, went on deaf when Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) crashed into a stationary Arakonam-Katpadi passenger train from behind while it was waiting at the signal on September 15. The impact of the collision was so powerful that three coaches of the stationary train and two of MEMU were thrown off the track. Around 10 persons were killed and 100 injured badly.
Immediately, after the tragic incident, swayamsevaks led by Kanchi Zilla Karyavah Shri Vasudevachandar reached the spot near Arakonam to help the victims. With the help of the dandas which they carried with them, they retrieved some dead bodies caught between the coach and the track. Under the guidance of police and railway authorities, they also sent the injured to various hospitals. Since it was raining and there was darkness, the swayamsevaks’ role, particularly their preparedness with danda, torch lights etc. were well noticed by the other rescuing personnel. (FOC)
