STEPHEN King’s latest work, an epic novel ‘Under the Dome’ is a science and fantasy plot. A small town, Chester’s Mill is, one fine afternoon cut off from the rest of the world. No one can enter the town and no one can leave it. As food supply dwindles and deaths pile up, a group of people get together to fight corruption that’s creeping up in the society. The people who have put the dome on the town, identified as ‘leatherheads’ seem to have done it for ‘entertainment’ to trap people and see what they do. A fire from an explosion wipes out the population, leaving only 29 alive. One of the survivors Julia approaches a female leatherhead, when she is alone and pleads with her to release them, sharing with the alien the painful childhood memories. In a little while the dome lifts. This is an epic King made an attempt to write twice earlier. King, the master story teller has authored 49 novels. Under the Dome is seen as one of his best works. The hardbound version ran 1074 pages and the paperback is equally voluminous. The story is fast moving and sustains the suspense in the now familiar King style. -VN
