BJP national president Shri Rajnath Singh said that there should be compulsory registration of citizens and non-citizens living in India. Addressing a dharna at Jantar Mantar, staged by the BJYM against illegal immigration in the North east, Shri Singh said, ?The UPA Government should prepare and maintain a National Register of Citizens.?

Expressing grave concern over rampant illegal immigration Shri Singh said a photo identity card should be issued to all Indian citizens as it would help the Government in detecting and deporting illegal immigrants from India.

Shri Singh said that following the agreement between India and Bangladesh signed on March 25, 1971 the Government should deport all illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who came to India after the March 1971.

Taking the UPA Government to task for pursuing vote bank politics he said, ?The vote bank politics pursued by Congress led UPA Government has put the internal security of India at stake. Recently the country witnessed a series of bomb blasts in different parts of the country. The role of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh working as sleeper modules has been identified in many cases. But the UPA Government is yet to act strongly against the growing menace of illegal immigration.?

Painting a gloomy picture of the north eastern States specially Assam the BJP president said, ?Growing illegal infiltration in the North east has changed the demographic profile of several districts in the region. The problem in Assam is even worse as more than 40 per cent assembly segments are now under direct influence of the illegal immigrants.?

Praising the role of Supreme Court in addressing the issue, Shri Rajanth Singh said that the Supreme Court had indicated a major constitutional failure when it had ruled that the Centre had not done its duty to protect Assam from ?external aggression? due to continuance of the IMDT Act (Illegal Migrant Determination by Tribunal Act).

?When the IMDT Act was declared ?unconstitutional? by the Supreme Court the UPA Government introduced the same provisions through Foreigner'sOrder 2006. It was a classic case of vote bank politics where the Government went to the extent of ignoring even the Supreme Court in its pursuit of vote bank politics?, he added.

Lambasting the UPA Government for its failure in checking infiltration Shri Singh said that the culture of the North-eastern region was in jeopardy. ?Therefore all vigilant forces in the country should step up their agitation to build up pressure on the government to address the problem of illegal immigration effectively?, said he.
