Sachar Committee Chairman, Justice Rajendra Sachar recently visited Ahmedabad as a guest at the Gujarat State Freedom of Expression Conference held on June 22. In his speech he referred to the police excesses on columnist who wrote an article in a local newspaper and stressed that democracy cannot function without freedom to press.

While he was moving out of the hall a large number of social workers and others surrounded and threw a barrage of questions at him. Shri Sachar appeared greatly distressed. They asked him questions like, ?What percentage of your report is correct?? And while talking to him they said, ?the figurative information in your report is far from truth. Banks are regularly offering loans to Muslims, still there is a false finding in your report that the situation is otherwise. Delhi High Court has already passed strictures against your report.? Hearing all this Justice Sachar appeared agitated and blamed the people of carrying a biased view. With difficulty Justice Sachar was escorted out of the irritiated mob to safety.
