The atrocities spread by the CPI(M) in the reputed Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal, are yet another shade of leftist politics in the university campus where caste-based allegations, character assassination and media manipulation have ruled the roost. They have successfully managed to poison the academics by defamation of those who dare to differ with their philosophy and practices. The stoical indifference and inaction of the university authority over the matter, even after dharna and cease work in the department for 18 long days, speaks volumes.

According to media reports, it was nothing but smashing of a long-cherished dream of the leftists to establish the supremacy of the left citadel that prompted them to level the charge of ?medieval attitude? against a distinguished senior professor of the Department of Education, Prof. Dibakar Kundu to defame him academically, socially and politically. In the beginning, it mistakenly thought to be an internal squabble between Prof. Kundu and Shri Prohlad Roy. But the malafide intention of Roy, a product of the leftist camp, have become crystal clear to the teachers, students, non-teaching staff and the guardians.

The record of the university reveals that Prof. Kundu, who is also vice president of West Bengal BJP, and Prohlad Roy were not initially at loggerheads with each other. Rather Prof. Kundu as the Principal and Head had been fairly affectionate and considerate to Roy. But in the capacity of Principal and Head of Vinaya Bhavan, Prof. Kundu could not accept and condone some of Roy'sgross irregularities. The students alleged that even inside the classroom, while teaching Roy digressed from his allegiance to and his crucial role on leftist politics. He often rushed to Delhi, Bangalore to participate in the meeting of the Focal Group casually leaving aside the Bengali classes and audaciously ignoring the Head and Principal. The university authorities resisted him from indulging in such whimsicalities as it came to their notice. But Roy squarely held Prof. Kundu responsible for all the allegations levelled against him by the students and the legal pressure mounted on him by the university authority.

Apart from this, Roy was entrusted with the responsibility of the hostel warden, but even from there he had to resign because of his malpractices, irresponsibilities and irregularities, which triggered students? demonstrations, agitations and protests. In last July the students of Vinaya Bhavan brought innumerable charges against Roy. Under these embarrassing circumstances Roy got his name enrolled for Ph.D in the University of Bardhaman, keeping the Visva Bharati as well as Prof Kundu in the dark. He even requested Prof. Kundu to ?manage? his illicit acts. But he refused to comply with his unfair request. This made Roy furious and he started making vicious plans to tarnish the image of Prof. Kundu according to the framework of leftist politics. He showed the effrontery to write a complaint latter against Prof. Kundu furnishing allegations of communalism, sexual insinuation, delivering lectures fraught with political implications and attached the signatures of the students taken on a blank sheet, which he got xeroxed, to the complaint letter and sent it to the Vice Chancellor on September 3, 2006. But the students of the Vinaya Bhavan informed the Vice Chancellor on September 14, 2006 that the allegations of Roy against Prof. Kundu were false, fabricated, malafide and their signatures were forged from the attendance sheet.

Apprehending the exposure of his crime, Roy started committing repeated mistakes. He wrote another letter to the Vice Chancellor on September 15, 2006 levelling accusations of caste discrimination against Prof. Kundu and highlighting that he is a victim of caste discrimination for belonging to the Malo community and faxed the copy of that long letter to the President of India who instructed the Visva Bharati to probe into the allegations of Roy. But the Fact Finding Committee headed by Prof. Ganapati Subbaiah revealed that the charges of Roy were baseless and nothing but the figments of his imagination.

After the publication of the report of the committee the left mentors of Roy allegedly started deliberating on the plans to save Roy who was already pushed to a tight corner and to launch further assault on Prof. Kundu. They invited Roy to a function on April 14 this year and instructed him to reiterate the same allegations against Prof. Kundu before the leftist-controlled print and electronic media. Roy did the same in compliance with the instructions of the mentors.

And, 24 Ghanta, the left-controlled TV channel, started telecasting these allegations for seven long days with the malicious design to defame Prof. Kundu academically, politically and socially. The channel even invited Roy to speak on a live-telecast programme entitled ?Jater name Bajjati? from 8 to 9 pm on April 14 and deliberately chose to keep Prof. Kundu outside the purview of the telecast. This sparked off strong protest by the students and teachers of the Department against the desperate and frantic attempts of the leftists to tarnish the image of Prof Kundu, who enjoys high regards among the students and teachers for his impartial attitude, sincerity, amiability, dutifulness and scholarship. As a result, the Vinaya Bhavan has been witnessing a deadlock over the issue for a long time and the Vice Chancellor'smysterious indifference to the issue has done nothing to diffuse the crisis.  (FOC)
