?Development of a country like India is impossible without the development of agriculture. Particularly for a third world country, agriculture is the backbone of economy. But the rapid industrialisation has minimised the farming process,? said Thakur Sankata Prasad Singh, president of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh. He was speaking at a farmers? rally organised at P.M.G Square in Bhubaneswar recently.

Shri Sankata Prasad Singh warned both the state and the central governments not to ruin the economy of the country by neglecting the interests of the farmers. He expressed concern over the growing suicides by farmers.

Shri Pravakar Rao Kelkar, national secretary of the Kisan Sangh, said the prices of gold and silver are increasing day-by-day but the prices of agricultural products are getting down. He said it is a great loss for the farmers by which their living standard has become pathetic and they are forced to commit suicide under the pressure of loan and credit.

The state general secretary of the Kisan Sangh Shri Prafulla Das stressed the need to educate the farmers for development of farming.

More than 20,000 farmers joined the rally. After the rally, four members of the Kisan Sangh met the Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik at his residence and presented him a memorandum demanding proper execution of irrigation, circulation of water, tax-free water, prohibition of water from Hirakud Dam to the industry and factories. They also demanded the MLAs and MPs to contribute financially to the agriculture sector.  (VISAKEO)
